I first started watching movies at home in the 1980s. In those days there was a great big battle raging between three different systems: VHS, Sony Betamax, and Philips as to which one would finally corner the market in movie viewing at home. In the end as we all know, VHS won out, although many experts thought the Betamax was better. But such is the nature of the market place. I can remember thinking how fragile a video tape seemed to be and how it would last a lifetime as it would need to do. Well, as it turned out, the video cassette did not need to last a lifetime, since it was very soon superseded by the dvd. Finally it seemed that you would no longer have the problem of going to the video store to get a video tape that then jammed or did not play back properly.

I remember when we first saw dvds. It seemed incredible that the picture could be so clear and realistic! And there was virtually no background hiss. This was due to the revolutionary digital playback method. However there was still the problem that you had to trudge over to the dvd store to get your dvd to rent or buy. And once dvds started to get a bit old, we discovered that careless use by a previous renter could cause scratches which made the picture skip. Also you might find that the movie of your choice was not available or was not in stock at your local store.

Renting or buying dvds on the internet from Amazon or one of the large supermarket chains that are sent to you through the mail seemed to provide the solution to some of these problems. You could sit at home with no hassle and your movies would come to you. But this time, although you always get a vast range to choose from, the problem is that you do not get the movie right away you have to wait for the postman to bring it to you. By that time you might not be in the mood for that movie!

But now it really does seem like ALL the problems have been solved.

Now you can download movies, with perfect picture quality, delivered instantly. And you can watch them right away. You only have to make sure that the website you obtain them from is operating legally, but apart from that, it is the most hassle free method of watching movies that we have seen in all of history!

Closer Look at Batman's Villains For Batman 3

With Batman the Dark Knight still fresh in our minds, we now focus onto who could be the next villain/s to star in the unnamed TDK sequel that has been called 'shadow of the bat' by many fans however this isn't an official name. Mytvtalk.com will take you through a list of possible villains of the 3rd movie in the franchise.

The Penguin

The Penguin was born as a deformed child named Oswald Cobblepot, and was bullied as a child because of his lack of height and bird beak shaped nose. In several stories of the Penguins origins he was made to carry an umbrella as a child by is over protective mother because his father died of pneumonia after being drenched in a downpour.

However Christopher Nolan has gone on record and said that some villains of the Batman universe wouldn't work well on screen, the penguin being one of them.

Catwoman

Originally know as Selina Kyle a woman who turned to the life of crime because of her love for diamonds, however over the years she has been known to have been a beaten housewife, a dominatrix and a prostitute. The later would fit more into the Dark Knight's universe as her attire would be easily explained in this way.

Having said all that David Goyer as expressed that both him and Nolan would rather use a villain that has not yet been seen before on screen in any batman franchise, however I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Catwoman making an appearance, as TDK made references that Batman's suit would be able to take an attack from a 'cat'.

The Riddler

Forget Batman forever and Jim Carrey's portrayal of the character and let's start fresh. Edward Nigma also known as Mr E or E.Nigma started solving puzzles as a young child when one of his school teachers announced that if one of the pupils were able to solve a certain puzzle then that person would win a prize. Later that night young Edward broke into the school and figured out how the riddle worked. When he won the prize by cheating, Edward grew up needing to feel this satisfaction again and again, over time his thrill of the challenge escalated to the point that he felt the only person worthy of challenging him was Batman.

Fans have already started name dropping stars such as 'Casey Affleck' to play the green menace, however this is just speculation and no names have been linked to the project as of yet. Another point that I haven't seen many people pick up on is the employee Coleman Reese which could be looked at as Mr. Reese (mysteries) maybe just a coincidence maybe not.

Harley Quinn

Dr Harley Quinn a villain not as popular to the non fans of comics would be an excellent addition to the Batman 3 franchise, but we would drop the Dr and just have her as Harley Quinn. For obvious reasons the Joker will not be present in the third movie of the franchise but that doesn't mean the events of The Dark Knight wouldn't inspire an copycat killers, just as Batman Begins inspired normal civilians to dress up as the caped crusader.

Deadshot

Fans of the comics will also not recognise this name, however Deadshot once a good guy turned hired gun could be an excellent choice for a villain. With Batman now on the run from the police and pretty much has destroyed the mob it would make sense that the best hired gun in the business to be called in to assassinate The Batman.

Could he work in Nolan's world? Defiantly as Batman has inspired people to try to become heroes but Deadshot would just use this angle to gain everyone's trust and then gradually try to take out Batman and then become king of the underworld like in his previous incarnations in the comics.

Two-Face

Yes he died in TDK, but if Nolan wanted to bring back the character via anyways possible we wouldn't object. However it seemed the character has lived its purpose, but I'm sure if Nolan wanted, two face could still be an interesting nemesis to the dark knight.

Mr Freeze

Ha-ha not a chance.

Movie Stars That Died Before Their Time

With the success of the Dark Knight and in particular The excellent performance of Heath Ledger as the Joker, Mytvtalk.com decided to take a look back at some of Hollywood's finest young actors and actresses who died before their time.

Heath ledger

Born Heath Andrew Ledger on the 4th of April 1979 and sadly passed away on the 22nd of January 2008. Heath was 28 at the time of passing. Rumour has it that Ledger only started to act because he was made to choose either to take cooking classes or acting classes, Ledger couldn't see his self cooking so he tried his hand at acting. At the age of 17 Ledger and one of his friends finished school and set off to Sydney Australia with a reported 69 cents in his pocket. Ledger would take many minor roles to try and get noticed from a gay cyclist to a small role in the television series home and away. Ledgers big break came when he appeared in an Australian crime thriller called Two Hands which got him noticed and also the part in 10 things I hate about you. However Ledger wasn't happy in being type cast as a Hollywood heart throb so Ledger would go on to take more serious roles in the future. In 2005 all of Ledger's hard work paid off, as his work in Brokeback Mountain earned him both an Oscar and Bafta nomination. Ledger who will go down as one of the best portrayals of a superhero arch enemy passed away of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs that included, sleeping pills, anti anxiety and pain killers.

Brad Renfro

Just a week before Heath Ledgers death, Brad Renfro also passed away. Renfro who made is acting debut at the young age of 11 in the movie 'The Client' which he starred alongside Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones. In December 2005 Renfro was charged and arrested for the possession of heroin and was sentenced to 3 years probation. Renfro broke this probation in 2007 by not enrolling in a long term drug treatment program. Renfro was found dead on the 15th of January 2008 after a night of partying; however official cause of death hasn't been determined. Renfro was 25 at the time of dying.

River Phoenix

The older brother of Joaquin Phoenix, and one time Oscar nominee died on the 31st of October 1993 after a drug overdose of Heroin and Cocaine. The 23 year old actor fell to the ground outside the Viper Room night club that was partly owned by Jonny Depp at the time. His brother Joaquin, sister Rain and girl friend Samantha were at the scene at the time and were unable to tell if River was still breathing when they phoned 911. River passed away at 1:51am on the morning of October 31st.

James Dean

The two time Oscar nominated actor also known as James Byron Dean was the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and remains the only person to have two posthumous acting nominations. James shot to stardom with movies such as Rebel without a Cause, East of Eden and Giant. James other passion rather than acting was racing cars, James came 2nd in the Palm Springs road races in March 1955 and 3rd at Bakersfield in May of the same year.
On September the 30th 1955 Dean and his Mechanic Rolf set off to enter in another race in California, Deans Porsche that was nicknamed 'Little Bastard' was supposed to have been put on a trailer that day, but a last minute decision which would be fatal to drive the car changed James fate forever. James Dean and his mechanic Rolf were hit head on by a 1950 Ford Custom Tudor coupe, in which the mechanic would survive but James wouldn't be so lucky. James Dean was pronounced dead at 5.59PM on the afternoon of September the 30th. Rolf the mechanic would live till 1981 where he would eventually die in a car accident. James Dean's famous last words would be 'That guy's gotta stop... He'll see us.' Dean died at the young age of 24.

John Candy

The comedy legend that first got noticed on the Canadian comedy show SCTV, which opened doors for the comedian/actor. Candy would star in the romantic comedy Splash along side Tom Hanks, from this point Candy mostly played lovable losers and characters with bad luck but big hearts in movies such as Uncle Buck and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Candy died of a heart attack in 1994.

Bruce and Brandon Lee

Bruce Lee the star of Enter the dragon was already a household name when he died of a cerebral edema at the young age of 32. Many years after the passing of Bruce in 1973 rumours still persisted that Bruce Lee had faked his own death.

Brandon lee the son of Bruce wasn't lucky enough to have even lived to the age of 32. Just like his dad a martial arts expert he also turned to acting. With Brandon's first major role in the movie the Crow (1993) things were looking up for Brandon, however a faulty prop gun on set led to the young actors death. Brandon died at the young age of 28.

Sharon Tate

Sharon Marie Tate was eight and half months pregnant when she was murdered in her home, along with four others, by followers of Charles Manson. Tate who in the 1960's played small roles in TV shows later went on to star in several films such as Valley of the Dolls in which she was nominated for a Golden Globe was regarded as one of Hollywood's up and coming stars. Her life was cut short when she was murdered along with 4 others at the age of 26.

Why the Western Won't Die

There's something about the western. For a long time it was one of the most popular genres on the landscape of entertainment in America. From the 1930s through the 1970s millions of Americans flocked to movie theaters each year to see stars like John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and Clint Eastwood face down the bad guys. Louis L'Amour, the most prolific author of western novels in history (and my personal favorite) has sold 225 million books. The western dominated television in America in the 1950s and 1960s, with approximately 120 television series produced. The record for the longest running prime time television show (1955 - 1975) is still held by Gunsmoke, a western starring James Arness as U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon. That record may soon fall, however, as several showsincluding, believe it or not, The Simpsons, are poised to equal or surpass that record. I guess nothing more starkly illustrates the changes in our society in the last few decades than the mind boggling fact that Homer Simpson may soon accomplish what scores of evil desperados couldn't do over two decades - take down Matt Dillon.

The heyday of the western has come and gone but the western has not ridden off into the sunset. It is an indisputable fact that since the 1980s fewer films and television shows produced have been westerns. Yet every so often some brave soul in Hollywood takes a chance and turns one out. Like a monster in an old grade B movie the western refuses to die.

Though few and far between, the television western has not been buried on Boot Hill yet.

In 1988 CBS gave us Paradise, a prime time television series starring Lee Horsley as Ethan Cord, a gunfighter who takes on raising his sister's four young children after her death. It was an excellent show and was more family oriented than a shoot 'em up but managed to work in plenty of action due to the circumstances of Cord's past. It ran for almost 3 seasons.
In 1989 CBS scored big with the made for television miniseries Lonesome Dove, which was based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Larry McMurtry that spent 20 weeks on the New York Times bestsellers list. It is the story of retired Texas Rangers Gus McRae, portrayed by Robert Duvall and Woodrow Call, portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones undertaking the first cattle drive from Texas to Montana. Widely regarded as one of the finest miniseries ever, Lonesome Dove was not only critically acclaimed; it was a huge ratings success. Over the four nights it ran it scored a ratings average of 26.1 with a 39% share of the audience. It also won 7 Emmy awards, 1 Peabody award, and 2 Golden Globe Awards. Lauded for its gritty realism, Lonesome Dove proved that we still like a good western and if Hollywood turns one out we will watch it in big numbers. Apparently even actors are not immune to the captivating spell of a good western. Robert Duvall commented that of all the roles he has played (and that's a considerable number considering he's been acting since the early 1960s) his favorite was that of Gus McRae.
In 1998 CBS took a chance again by airing the prime time television show The Magnificent Seven, based on the classic 1960 film with the same title starring Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen. As a huge fan of the original movie I must admit I watched the pilot episode of the show prepared to condemn it as a cheap rip off and an insult to the fine film it was based on. I could not have been more wrong. It was not only a great show but the clever tweaking of the characters paid homage to the original. The show starred Michael Biehn as Chris in the Yul Brynner role and Eric Close as Vin in the Steve McQueen role. Unfortunately, the network kept bouncing it around on the schedule as so often happens and it never managed to find an audience. It was gone in 2000 with only 22 episodes produced. It is 2008 so I guess CBS should be putting out a western television series this year if the pattern holds. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Theatrical films have not been completely devoid of westerns either since the 1970s.

The 1980s - The Long Riders (1980), Pale Rider (1985) and Silverado (1985)
The 1990s - Dances With Wolves (1990), Tombstone(1993) and Wyatt Earp (1994)
The 2000s - Crossfire Trail (2001), Open Range (2003) and 3:10 To Yuma (2007)
This is by no means a complete list. I just picked a few examples for illustrative purposes.

Now we get to the meat of the issue. Why has the western not become extinct? I have a theory about why the American people are always receptive to the western.

The western resonates with us. It is perhaps the most uniquely American form of storytelling.
We Americans are a straightforward people. We like our entertainment straightforward. Good guy versus bad guy works for us. The Europeans call us blunt and simplistic. Maybe we are. Maybe they just don't understand a good old fashioned face to face to settle an issue. Nuance is for sissies. We did not build this nation with nuance.

The western is the ultimate morality play. There is no room for moral relativism. It's about good against evil and nobody sits on the fence. We like the idea of good standing up to evil and defeating it. In this post 9/11 world I believe most Americans understand the need to take a stand against evil and defeat it.

Nothing typifies the American spirit like the western. Rugged individualists facing adversity with courage, dignity, a "Can Do" attitude, and just plain grit is a concept anyone can admire.
Westerns remind us what it's like to face tough times without whining about how tough life is. When drought or flood or grasshoppers got the crops people choked it down and went on looking toward better times next year. When a rancher shot a wolf or a mountain lion after his stock he didn't get sued by PETA. If a woman had to wield a rifle to defend the homestead while her man was away she didn't look for a therapist afterward or keep the kids out of school for counseling.

We like our heroes. Whether it's Superman standing up for truth, justice and the American way, Jack Bauer pursuing terrorists or our brave troops in the armed forces fighting to defend our nation we love our heroes. We need them. Our heroes are extensions of ourselves. They stand up for what's right. They protect us. They defend the weak. Because of the very nature of the settings and circumstances of westerns there are more opportunities for heroic behavior than in more civilized and sedate environments. The western lends itself to producing heroes.

We're proud of our country. We're proud of what we've achieved in a little over two centuries. We're proud of what it took to forge this nation from the wilderness. We're proud of what our country stands for. Even the things we have done in our history that we cannot be proud of like our mistreatment of the black man and the red man can lead us to be proud because we addressed those horribly unjust situations and tried to correct them. We have admitted we have done wrong and progressed as a society. We are not perfect but we should be given credit for being honest about the darker chapters of our history. I believe in a world where in the 21st century slavery still exists and certain nations rewrite the history of WWII to absolve themselves of guilt The United States Of America deserves to not be judged too harshly.

I believe these factors account for the American people's affection for the western. I believe this is an enduring love affair that will never end. I believe there will always be room for a good western on the American entertainment scene whether it's in the form of a book, a television show, a play, or a feature film. Yeah, there's something about the western.

Get Smart - Movie Review

The plot of this movie is pretty simple, there are good guys and bad guys and the good have to stop the bad guys from killing innocent people one of which includes the president. However this movie includes a not so normal lead analyst known as Maxwell Smart (Carell) who works for a counter terrorism agency and desperately wants to become a field agent. Even after passing the field agent test Max is not aloud to go out in the field as his boss (Arkin) tells him that he is the best analyst they have and that he needs him to keep put.

However Max is promoted to a field agent when the bad guys find out all of the names and locations of the current agents and start to kill them, with the help of agent 99 (Hathaway) and agent 23 (The Rock/Dwayne Johnson) smart is sent to take down the bad guys.

Get Smart has taken a realistic approach to a movie and sometimes feels as if you could be watching a bond movie due to feeling that some of the gadgets are right up Q's street. However some of the scenes are not to realistic such as hanging on to a wire while flying in mid air but this does add some more laughs to the movie. Steve Carell is very likable in this movie like we have all come to expect and shares some great onscreen chemistry with co star Hathaway.

I enjoyed this movie due to many of the above points, from the great characters to the very nice looking eye candy that is Hathaway. Get Smart works simply because it does its own thing unlike many of the 'comedies' released in the last couple of years such as 'disaster movie, date movie, meet the Spartans and many more unfunny movies'.

Get Smart achieves what a comedy should, it makes you laugh and for that reason Mytvtalk.com awards Get Smart with 4 out of 5 stars.

Sex And Lucia - Foreign Film Review

Synopsis: Lucía (Paz Vega) is a free-spirited waitress who's trying to get over a bad breakup with her boyfriend Lorenzo (Tristán Ulloa), who's a writer. When she hears that Lorenzo's been in a car accident, she assumes he's been killed.

Devastated, Lucía takes a trip to the remote island off the Spanish mainland where she and Lorenzo used to go. While coming to terms with her loss and life, she meets Elena (Najwa Nimri), who runs a lodging house for visitors (kind of like a bed & breakfast).

The story then takes us back six years prior, and we learn about the intertwined histories of Lucía, Lorenzo, and Elena, and the emotional entanglements that result. And while working on his latest novel, Lorenzo discovers that he's the father of an illegitimate child.

As he later becomes intrigued with the child's alluring nanny, Belén (Elena Anaya), Lorenzo's real-life complications find themselves into his work and we're treated to a complicated and often confusing tale of sex, romance, love triangles, jealousy...and cooking.

Remarks: At its core, Sex and Lucia is actually a pretty intriguing story with the blending of time, characters' lives, fiction, and reality done in very creative ways. As it was with Lovers of the Arctic Circle (Los Amantes del Círculo Polar), Julio Medem once again makes a compelling drama about seriously dysfunctional people.

The coincidental, and seemingly impossible connections between characters, made me think of David Lynch's Mulholland Drive at times. But as confusing as it is, this mobius strip of a film somehow logically works itself out in the end. From a technical standpoint, the cinematography is great and the bright, stylized way that many of the exteriors are filmed give the film a lot of character.

However, the overall narrative of Sex and Lucia doesn't quite live up to its juicy title. Sure, there is plenty of sex in the first half of the movie, but once the plot starts thickening the tone changes so much that you might wonder if you're still watching the same film. And once that happens, the sex scenes from before start feeling out of place.

Don't get me wrong. As a guy, I have no problem with seeing Paz Vega and Elena Anaya in the buff. But after I (eventually) discovered that this story was indeed a deep psychological drama (as opposed to a porno disguised as art), I think this film could have worked fine without the gratuitous nudity and shameless boob shots.

Furthermore, Paz Vega's character Lucía is not as central to the entire story as we're led to believe, so I'm not sure the title is all that accurate. And if I'm not mistaken, the slinky red dress that Vega wears on the Sex and Lucia movie poster (and DVD cover) isn't actually seen in the film.

Who would like this movie: You'll like the first half of Sex and Lucia if you're the type who's too embarrassed to rent porn from your local video store because you're worried that the sales clerk or other customers in line will think you're some kind of pervert.

But when the actual story kicks in, this movie should appeal to fans of foreign films and those who appreciate complex, psychological narratives. But the contrast between the first and second halves are jarring, and will most likely color your overall expectations/impressions of the film.

Ricky Gervais's Special Friend

Ricky Gervais is of course most famous for his critically acclaimed sitcom "The Office" which he co-wrote and co-directed with his writing partner Stephen Merchant. They followed the success of "The Office" with another critically acclaimed sitcom "Extras". Gervais and Merchant are multiple award winners including BAFTA's, Emmy's and Golden Globes.

A less well known figure is one Karl Pilkington. An uneducated man from the north of England whose only academic qualification was an "E" in history. A man with a child like brain, intellectually at the opposite end of the spectrum from the university educated award winners. So what's his connection with Gervais and Merchant? Well read on.

There's a website dedicated to a radio show which ran on London's XFM between 2001 and 2005. It featured Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and the round headed comedy genius that is Karl Pilkington. Remakes - Hollywood Gets Lazy

Checking my various feeds each day, along with the biggest movie related websites, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain interest in the product of Hollywood. Where once there was a sense of excitement and anticipation when a new project was announced or leaked, be it via internal spies or intentional viral marketing, now there is a sense of dread. I head to the feeds wondering which classic film is next up for the shabby remake treatment.

Of late, there literally is not a day goes by without another much loved film being remade, and it really is a worrying trend. Instead of coming up with new ideas, or optioning the thousands of books, comics, stories, spec scripts and more that they have at their disposal, studios big and small are languishing in a creative limbo and just rehashing old material in order to cash in on brand familiarity.

This is a terrible trend, as it breeds apathy towards the medium and suppresses creativity. If people are content to pick up DVDs of films they already have (just with a different, lesser cast and better effects), then there will be less chance of truly original films being made by big studios. Smaller studios may well be producing derivative work in all genres, but they are still managing some originality in there too. It is understandable if the films that are being remade really weren't that convincing the first time around, or if a series really needs a reboot (Batman, for example), but remaking everything in sight is only going to annoy your audience in the long run.

Good examples of remakes working are films such as the 1986 version of The Fly, or John Carpenter's version of The Thing, both of which took the premise and did something new and interesting with it- those films carry the same stories but told in such a manner that they feel fresh and compelling in their own right. The current upsurge in 'That was popular, lets do a cheapo remake quick' attitudes in la-la land seems to bypass the notion of originality altogether.

The stores (both physical and digital) are absolutely bursting at the seams with content as it is- nobody needs or wants most of these remakes/reboots/reimaginings, and the audiences are starting to get a little fed up with the same old things being offered time and again. We didn't need an Omen remake. We never asked for A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th to be remade, and we certainly never entertained the thought of remaking Hellraiser or Highlander, and yet they're all being produced. All that happens is the films end up as bargain bin DVDs and the reputation and appreciation of the original films is tarnished by the new incarnations, which are rarely a patch on the real thing. Hell, even Poltergeist and The Creature From The Black Lagoon are being regurgitated into substandard popcorn fodder as we speak.

Put down that stack of films you want to cash in on and go and read some of your slush piles. In those piles you'll find more originality that we have seen onscreen in a decade. If you must, simply MUST make something that already exists, then adapt a book or a graphic novel or even an anime series. Don't keep plundering the vaults for classics to ruin.

What happened to you Hollywood? You've never had the best ideas in the world, but at least you had ideas at all.

Review Top Sheet: Tagline : hell on heels. A great watch worth your time and money with no vulgarity and sexual scenes which plague too many of Hollywood's movies these days. It's also been claimed that the story is based on Anna Wintour the editor-in-chief of Vogue. An article published in the New York Times 'fashion&style' (December28 2006) titled 'The devil likes attention' claims of editors in chief of Vogue and Marie Claire to produce a series of mini documentaries on life at the magazine due to the public's fascination on the subject and the great success and influence of genres like 'The Devil Wears Prada' and 'Ugly Betty'.

Will you like this film?

Yes if: you are in or into the high fashion industry yourself or any brand-conscious person for that matter.

No if: you're more of an adrenaline junkie and despise any genre near to 'girlie' stuff.

Maybe if: you've enjoyed watching The Princess Diaries. Here Anne Hathaway undergoes a somewhat different transformation and there is Meryl Streep instead of Julie Andrews to please.

Comments: This film is set in the bustling cosmopolitan of New York and Paris portraying the highs and lows of the multibillion dollar fashion industry and at the centre of it all playing an integral role is the fashion magazine 'runway' and the posh, hard-to-please woman whose running it Miranda Priestly (Streep) who is known for her attitude (dragon lady) and her second assistant Andrea Sachs (Hathaway) who tries very hard to fit in and morphs from a simple, plain-styled girl to a trendy glam queen. I personally feel that Streep landed this job as a subtle way of proving her critiques wrong, who for years had criticized her fashion sense especially during functions and awards and have been quoted for turning up with something two sizes bigger. When questioned in the Oprah show (together with Jim Carrey for the preview of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events) and asked what she'd like to say to her critiques. She just smiled and said 'no, that's okay, they're just doing their job'. Well here we have Ms. Streep at her very best gliding away in trendy, lavish and definitely 'in' attires.

Story Comments: The character of Andrea had no other choice and had to accept a job offer at Elias Clarke as a personal assistant to the editor-in-chief which doesn't involve any writing. She only sees this as a stepping stone to another journalism position within a year. And to please her boss she undergoes a total make-over with the help of Nigel (Stanley Tucci) the magazine's art director. And when she was forced to quit by the almost impossible task of getting the unpublished Harry Potter book for Miranda's twins, Andrea used her resources and talents and managed to get the manuscript hence leaving her boss awestruck. Then there is the character of Emily who initially appeared to be a self-centered unpleasant workmate who actually turned out to have a soft side and not-so-evil, in fact she's just trying to work very hard to achieve her own dream and gets crappy when Andrea does things faster. The movie sends a message to all those fashion-unsavy people who despises and regard it as something less than important. All in all the moral of the story is that everything comes with a cost and eventually hard work prevails and will be rewarded.

Dialogue Comments: The dialogue's up to date with phrases and jargons of the fashion industry with words like 'couture', 'stilettos' etc. worth mentioning here though is that Miranda Priestly 's dialogues are somewhat limited and she conveys most of her messages through her eyes, lips, facial expression and body language. Now they don't simply call her as one of the best actress of all times do they. She hardly raises her voice and speaks in a soft tone and yet manages to appear 'devilish'.

Substance Comments: Anne Hathaway charms the audience yet again with her smile and wide eyes. And mesmerizes everyone with another on-screen transformation, this time not into a princess or queen but from a nerdish girl into a fashion-savy, hip chick working for the immaculate 'devil- herself'. But there is also a lot of deciphering to do especially with Miranda since her character is not always verbal, like when she takes a second look at the 'new' Andrea and sort of acknowledges her fashion sense triumph. Or in the ending scene when Andrea nods and waves gratefully for her good reviews to a newspaper editor, she (Miranda) knowingly turns away and gets into her car but then smiles to herself as if seeing herself in Andrea many years ago when she was climbing the corporate ladder herself. Uncomplicated, easy to grasp, light-hearted story line.

Filmcraft comments: Great music to lift your spirits up, in par with each scene. Note the lyrics of the songs too; it says something about the characters. Beautifully caught sights of New York city and Paris with the intricacies and grandeurs of fashion life; of the rich and famous. Valentino and Heidi Klum makes an appearance .In short, big cars, big bucks and latest trends in the fashion industry.

A taste of the story: A girl who abandoned a Stamford law offer to purse her dream career in journalism somehow or rather manages to land a job as a second assistant to Miranda priestly ;the vicious, devilish boss of the top fashion magazine 'Runway'. Hoping that this will pave the way for her future advancement, she learns the hard way trying to please Miranda and eventually earns her respect and trust but with a price. Find out her trials and tribulations and if she continues to climb the corporate ladder of fame and fashion while her personal relationship goes up in smoke or will she retreat, resign and pursue what her heart desires; what she set out for in the beginning and return to her loved ones.

The Academy Award for Best Loser

The Academy Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars, are the highest accolade for directors, actors and writers to achieve. The outrageously glamorous ceremony is held each year to much fascination, excitement and media clamour. With regular viewing figures of over 30 million people, the Oscars are the most-talked about film event in the world.

Winners are lauded with praise as Earth's film fans watch the emotional speeches about who helped them along the way. But what about the winners that never were? Those that managed to slip through the net of glory, as a less-deserving winner stole the prestigious statuette.

As the friends and families of losers all over the world have said at one time - 'somebody has to lose'. To lose is not a pleasant feeling for anybody, but a to have a deserved victory snatched from one's grasp is a devastating blow. Just ask Martin Scorsese, who until 2007 failed to win the Academy Award for Best Director despite a succession of fantastic films.

Scorsese, since his directorial debut in 1963, had managed a massive 59 Oscar nominations prior to the release of The Departed. Five of these nominations were for Best Director, for film classics such as Raging Bull, The Aviator and Goodfellas.

Film fans all over the world will be aware that Goodfellas was nominated for six Academy Awards, with Joe Pesci scooping the film's only gong for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Despite the Academy's apparent failure to praise the film adequately, many other polls and award ceremonies were more just in their decisions.

Various film awards were presented to the film, its cast and of course the film's director Martin Scorsese. Fifteen years after its release, in 2005, Goodfellas was named the greatest film of all time in a popular movie magazine poll. This celebrated, commercial and critical success had lost out at the Oscars to Dances With Wolves and Kevin Costner. Ridiculous.

Scorsese is not the only director to have been senselessly ignored for the big prize, history is filled with nearly-men and also-rans. Quentin Tarantino burst onto the scene in 1992 with his heist-movie Reservoir Dogs, an independent film that would become a critical success. Tarantino was the seen as the 'next big thing' in Hollywood and when his next film arrived, the anticipation was more than warranted.

Pulp Fiction smashed every other film of 1994 out of the water with its rich dialogue, clever use of a nonlinear narrative and some fantastic performances from Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and a dramatic comeback from john Travolta. However, at the Academy Awards it won only one of its seven nominations - the Best Original Screenplay Award.

The winner of Best Picture, Best Director and four additional Oscars in the year of Pulp Fiction was Robert Zemeckis' Forrest Gump. A fun, jovial trip through 20th century America, Forrest Gump was a commercial and critical success (six Oscars and 677 million dollars gross revenue) but surely cannot be considered in the same breath as the work of Tarantino.

Tarantino is yet to repeat his Oscar win in 1994, and will undoubtedly avoid the Best Director award with his controversial subject-matter and violent films. However, if the likes of Mel Gibson's Braveheart are picking up Best Picture and Best Director, maybe it's for the best that Tarantino goes unnoticed by the Academy.

There have been some embarrassing decisions at the Oscars in its history, with films like Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey losing out to Oliver! for Best Picture and Best Director. The strange choices are not consigned solely to the films but have always appeared in the awards for actors and actresses.

Tom Hanks winning the Best Actor Award for Forrest Gump may have been a reasonable choice, but when you look at the nominations there could have been a more worthy winner. Films like Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption were in the running, yet the sentimental movie took most of the plaudits in 1994.

In 1976, Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver) and Sylvester Stallone (Rocky) were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor but lost out to Peter Finch for his performance in Network. Now, Finch was impressive in the role but is it possible that De Niro didn't win because of the violent film for which he was nominated. Scorsese's film would receive a total of four nominations and would win none.

Controversy will always surround the decision of the Academy, with so many films, actors and directors fighting for the coveted titles. With so much acclaim attached to a single award, it is unsurprising that the competition is so tough and contested.

Decisions are made, arguments ensue and film fans everywhere will be asking the question as to why their favourite was unsuccessful. There have been some strange, and even unbelievable results that have left the critics and fans equally bemused.

So, after 44 years of trying, Martin Scorsese picked up his massively overdue Best Director Award for The Departed. If this is anything to go by, Quentin Tarantino may get the recognition for his work by about 2038, as long as he tones down the violence and swearing a little.

Pizza! The Movie was an ambitious project to begin with. On the surface making pizza seems simple enough. alright, you make dough with water, yeast, salt and maybe add some olive oil. Stretch out the dough, throw on a little olive oil, some tomatoes, some cheese and pepperoni or whatever. It's easy. Right?

Not so to anyone who has made pizza from the heart, and certainly not for someone who makes a movie with heart about pizza. Pizza! The Movie will not be all things to all people. The film does not pretend to be. There will be pizza fans who are disappointed. After all fimmaker Michael Dorian had to narrow his focus.

Dorian has done an excellent job of hitting all of the high spots of pizza. He tackles New York Pizza, Neapolitan pizza and Pepe's pizza. He discusses Chicago Deep Dish pizza. He uncovers the Chicago Deep Dish controversy. He travels the country from end to end searching out snippets and facts about the pizza culture.He interviews Peter Reinhart of American Pie, he talks to Chris Bianco, of Pizzeria Bianco, I even noticed Gary Bimonte of Pepe's comparing good pizza to a home-run.

He touches on Pizza Delivery Drivers, featuring a clip from another movie about Pizza Delivery Drivers. He talks to pizza fans of all ethnic flavors and tastes. Dorian left no pizza box unopened or pizza pie untasted.

He uncovers several myths and tales about pizza. One of the brightest moments of the film is an uncensored interview with Ed LaDou, the inventor of California pizza. Enter Tony Gemignani, five time World Champion Pizza Thrower, owner of Pyzano's of California and head of the U.S. Pizza Team. Tony's struggles are chronicled as he faces a major dispute in a Pizza Tossing Championship. The drama unfolds as the two major pizza magazines of the pizza industry (PMQ and Pizza Today) are pitted against one another.

We follow Tony and his new team The World Pizza Champions to Italy to compete against other countries in Pizza Tossing, dough stretching and other pizza realted events. Tony shows his passion and emotions for all things pizza.

This is a must see film for anyone who ever enjoyed a pizza. This film captures the taste and essence of pizza right up to the end. The use of Joe Dolce's incredible anthem "Pizza, Pizza", for the closing credits, is a clever addition.

My only complaint: Dorian should rename the film Pizza! The Movie, Volume Number 1

I am sure there is enough material left on the cutting room floor for several other Pizza! The Movies, Volumes 2,3,4 and 5! I can't wait. Pizza on Earth...

The Lighter Side of the Dark

The recent release of The Dark Knight comes following months of eager anticipation that has been palpable since the untimely death of one of its stars. But what really is the appeal of the movie?

As a fan of Batman from the original comic books and television series through to the debut performance of Christian Bale in 'Batman Begins', I had built up in my own mind the latest installment from British director Christopher Nolan as being something special. Fortunately, I was not to be disappointed.

In the same way as the preceding movie, the sheer darkness and gripping storytelling of the film keeps the audience captivated from start to finish. This time around, however, Nolan and his co-writer brother Jonathan added lighter moments in a script that could otherwise have only had a rich, maudlin quality coupled with fast-paced action scenes. But with a lead character named The Joker, an element of humour - no matter how dark - was always going to be demanded.

Much has been written about the performance of the late Heath Ledger in the role of The Joker, the majority of which I had previously discounted as little more than the usual eulogies so often reserved for the recently departed. Yet the transformation of the actor into the maniacal yet hugely entertaining villain of the piece was nothing short of remarkable.

Trailers featuring The Joker offered only a slight glimpse into the full scope of a character that requires sole attention when on screen. The level of humour and fear that he instills in the viewer is as exciting as any action scene throughout the entirety of the movie. Whether his performance deserves a posthumous Oscar or not we shall see, but the pencil trick should go down as one of the most darkly amusing scenes in modern cinema!

Equally as transfixing was the performance of Bale as the eponymous hero. Reviving the mystique and intensity that was (among much more) so embarrassingly missing from the Joel Schumacher movies, the performances of Bale in both The Dark Knight and, in particular, Batman Begins have created a character that the viewer can immediately identify and empathise with. An incredible feat considering the limited screen time Bale is given throughout the course of the more recent movie.

If I had to criticise anything about the film, however, it would only be due to my own selfishness. Like discovering a new musical artist at their rawest (and arguably best), the wide-reaching appeal of the film takes the personal, less commercialised feel of it away from the viewer. However, any movie derived from a comic book is guaranteed to appeal to great audiences, and the unscrupulous nature of film producers will want as many people as possible to buy cinema tickets.

But for me, films of limited appeal and whose audiences grow through word of mouth only serve to add to the romance of movies as an art form. But then again, to leave this magnificent piece of film work out of reach of the masses would be a crime.

Tales of an Ancient Empire

It very well might have been 1982 in my living room that evening. Candles radiated a warm and comforting glow that lent a little mystery and magic to my ordinary domicile as the incense sparked to life and I slid the movie into the DVD player.

Could it be, after all these years, the miracle that was Netflix has brought home to me one of my most cherished childhood experiences? What would it look like 26 years after the memory of a young girl filed it away as one of the most magical and inspirational occurrences of her life?
I allowed my mind to wander as the player queued and I think I remembered the brilliant strength of the Hero, Talon, and his amazing sword of steel. I braced myself for the eerie beginning of a king and a witch who raise a sorcerer from his tomb, but mostly because I have chilling recollection of screaming faces and tortured souls that lined the coffin. This was the stuff that adventures were made of! This was the evil that spawned a hundred Dungeons and Dragons games...and I was immediately captured by the 'Sword and the Sorcerer' in the same way that I had always been.

I was a little girl again, in love with the Hero and wishing I were the woman he risked his life to be with for one night. I realized then how much the movie had influenced my writing as I grew into the process; how many games it inspired me to play along the way and how it set the bar for the fantasy worlds I would come to write.

The credits dwindled away and I watched every single one, of course. At the very end, when I knew it would be over, I saw a special message! Did they just say to watch for more of Talon's adventures in 'Tales of an Ancient Empire'?

I rushed to the internet, the glorious connection to all things great and small in the universe...And therein I found a special announcement. Albert Pyun, the original director of the 'The Sword and the Sorcerer' had indeed announced a special sequel, 'Tales of an Ancient Empire' to be released in 2010!

I don't know what it's about, and my only regret is that I didn't have a chance to work on the project in any way. I do know, for sure, that I'll be there with bells on. After all, two years is nothing after I've waited 26 for this occasion.

Filmography of the Yellowstone National Park

The Yellowstone National Park is one of the world's greatest natural land and water formations. It is only natural that a lot of novels, movies and documentaries have been written about the park. The park is the subject or the location of some media exploring both its beauty and its hidden fictional and real sinister power.

The earliest known movies associated with the park were taken in 1897 and directed by Mr. Thomas A. Edison; these were reported by Filminamerica: two black-and-white mini-movies entitled "Tourists Going Round Yellowstone Park" (18 seconds) and "Lower Falls, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park" (26 seconds).

One of the many movie guides made from the park is that with an obvious title of "Yellowstone Park", which features the grandeur of the park's beautiful scenery. It was designed to promote the park by showcasing the different water forms that the park offers to the visitors: its beautiful geysers, waterfalls, hotsprings and reflective lakes. The film took 25000 hours to complete but it was well worth the effort of the team.

Other travelogs include the much acclaimed best travelog "Yellowstone: Imprints of Geologic Time", "Yellowstone's Amazing Wildlife", and "Yellowstone: The World's Most Amazing Park". "Amazing Wonders of the World: Kingdom of the West - Yellowstone, Yosemite & Glacier National Parks" also featured the park along with the two other natural parks of equal beauty.

A docudrama series shown in BBC and Discovery channel, the first part of which is entitled "Supervolcano", evolved around the park's volcanic caldera. The film's fictional characters struggled to contain the spontaneous eruptions happening all over the park which spread across the globe. The film featured stunning imagery of volcanic eruptions and showed computer simulations of how the earth might look like after such violent destruction. It all ends with the park and a large part of the US buried in volcanic ash. And like all the other doomsday movies, the whole earth was affected by the eruptions and turned into a crazy world with the upper part in volcanic winter and the lower part in ice age or in drought. The second part of the docudrama was more of a documentary that provides evidence to the authenticity of the movie. It was entitled "Supervolcano: The Truth About Yellowstone".

Departing from documentaries, the Yellowstone National Park is another one of Hollywood's favorite venues. Movies starring the best of the stars have dominated the box office. One such movie is the 1992 film version of the novel with the same title: The River Runs Through It, which grossed $43,440,294 based on the report of Boxofficemojo. Another one of these is "The Horse Whisperer", also an adaptation of a novel with the same title written by the renowned Nicholas Sparks.

Even NASA has some mini-movies dedicated to the park. In the Cool Cosmos website, short movies (less that one minute) were posted, all designed to show through infrared videography both the beauty and power of the "Earth's geothermal power". These include some geysers, hot springs and even some local wildlife, all captured in infrared. It shows an interesting and unique way to view the park.

These are just few of the numerous movies credited to the beauty of the majestic Yellowstone Park. We should be expecting more movies of greater caliber to be made of this awesome wonder of nature in the years to come.

Has America Become Clap-Happy? - Why Are People Applauding in Movie Theaters?

I've noticed a trend in the last five to seven years -- you're in a movie theater, the movie ends, the credits roll...and people start clapping.

My first response has always been to ask, "You know the people who made this movie aren't here, right?" People didn't always clap at the end of movies. Sometimes they did it during the movie -- like if, say, a belittled office drone finally works up the courage to tell off his boss -- and sometimes they booed in the middle or at the end. But the applauding when the credits roll is something newer. And I don't like it.

The issue is that clapping is often a forced activity. Yes, sometimes you really do want to applaud something or someone, but other times it's like watching the painfully scripted applause breaks during a State of the Union address. Movies seemed to be the last bastion of entertainment where you could just get up from your seat and not have to assure someone that they did a good job.

The difference between movies and other events -- concerts, plays, sports games -- is that in most cases, the people responsible for the movie aren't there to receive the applause. You're basically sending out your approval to a blank screen.

Two major developments could be responsible for this growing clap-happiness:

1) The Internet. Today, people can give their opinion on anything and everything, and it can be done quickly.

2) The growing popularity of film festivals. It's not just Cannes and Sundance anymore; local libraries, colleges and movie theaters are hosting festivals that let more people encounter the film fest experience. And at film fests, it's appropriate to clap since the people who made or appeared in the movie are often in attendance. At the very least, you can thank the people who organized the festival.

But for every other movie experience, I ask you to sit on your hands -- we clap enough as a society as it is.

Is it Just Celebrity Gossip Or Truth?

I have never been that interested in what the "celebrities" were doing. I was too busy living my own exciting life filled with my relationships, work, moving, gaining weight, losing weight among all the other stuff we all go through. But one day my cousin sent me an email titled "Latest Movie Star Exposed!" with reference to a celebrity that was in one of the latest movies. It showed her doing a very scandalous act that was not only funny but astonishing, it made me think, my life is nothing like these famous people!

I was hooked. I wanted to see what they were all doing. Who they were marrying, sleeping with, which ones were pregnant, who had what and would they be around to star in another favorite movie. I also love to search to see who is wearing what and what the newest fashions will be. After all, we know that if Nicole Kidman walked down the street wearing a paper sack, we would all want one. And, if Jennifer Aniston colored her hair purple and green, there would be woman everywhere doing it.

But what is the real reason we all like to watch and copy our favorite celebs? Is it because our lives are just so mundane with everyone doing the same thing. You get your education, get married, have a kid or so. You raise the kids, maybe you stay married or not. But it doesn't matter, none of it is as entertaining as the scandals and rumors that go on in the life of our favorite celebrity.

I personally think it has something to do with the roles they play. You see them in the movie portraying someone that can turn into a super hero like Batman, who can "fly" around and save good people from the evil. Then, you find out that he was just a regular little boy who had a horrible childhood experience so you figure that Michael Keaton or Christian Bale are these amazing heroes that can do anything, even in real life.

You see Diane Lane going to Italy on a whim and buying an awesome countryside house and then falling in love and you think she is such a lucky person, you want to know more about her. I must admit though that she is a pretty darned blessed. She is married to celebrity Josh Brolin and step daughter-in-law to my mom's favorite person in the celebrity world, Barbara Streisand. In fact, she is coming out in a new movie with Mr. Gere and when my mom saw her hairstyle in the previews, she had to go out and get the same haircut!

We also love to be connected with saying we know a celebrity personally. I have my own story of an up and coming star, Haley Bennett from Music and Lyrics. I have personally known her since she was born, her mother and my mother are best friends. We always look for news and pictures of Haley and just know that if there are ever any nasty scandals associated with her, they cannot be true. No matter if Haley is playing a young ditsy blond or a child of Satan, none of it is really her, she is only playing a part.

There is no doubt that James Bond is an iconic figure in fictional espionage. He is considered the ultimate spy and throughout the years, James Bond movies have entertained countless fans to become one of the longest running and most successful franchises in movie history. One has to ask though, what makes this character stand the test of time?

The collection of James Bond movies spans more than forty years encompassing twenty plus movies. The character has not only survived the fictional perils of global espionage but even the death of the creator himself. With new writers continuing the franchise and actor reboots, the essence of James Bond has surprisingly remained the same: a jet-setting, womanizing super spy with the latest technology at his disposal. Undoubtedly, this lends to audience appeal.

James Bond was the fictional creation of Ian Flemming, a British journalist with a navy background. He based the British Secret Service agent partly on himself: his life-stlye and his taste in women. It cannot be argued that this formula has been met with resounding success.

The parade of beautiful women has been a consistent theme with all James Bond movies. With the casting of each new movie, questions arise on who the new Bond girl is going to be. James Bond is thought of as a playboy who has had his heart broken from previous relationships thus making his womanizing more palatable for the audience.

Another running theme in the books and movies is the technology at Bond's disposal. Whether it's flashy cars or spy gadgets, the MI6 agent is well supplied by the research and development division of the British Secret Service. Bond has gotten out of many jams thanks to his arsenal of electronic toys much to the disbelief and delight of his fans.

With the entourage of women, the cars and the spy gadgets available, there's no denying that James Bond handles all these perks with flair. It takes a special character to be likable and not make the audience green with envy. But despite Bond's savoir-faire and sophistication, he's still a character with which male fans can relate and women fans still find endearing.

It is hard to believe that when Ian Flemming first created the character, he intentionally named his spy with one of the dullest sounding names possible. James Bond is anything but dull with his jet-setting lifestyle. If the movie studios remain true to the formula with Bond girls and spy gadgets, we'll be enjoying many more movies in the future with the line echoing, "the name is Bond, James Bond".

Hellboy II - The Golden Army - Review

As with all my movie reviews, I shall give you an honest opinion of the movie, going through both its good and bad points. Now, to start with, and I must write this before I forget, I had a major issue with the contingency of the movie, centering around the character Abe Sapian.

Those of you familiar to this series of comic know that Abe is a water inhabitant that in order to survive out in the open must wear the water equivalent of an oxygen tank...though its not exactly a water tank, but anyway I digress. For the first half hour of the movie, Abe wears this tank when both in the Headquarters and the outside world...however, randomly, part way through the movie seems to decide that he can actually breathe oxygen and the water tank disappears for the rest of the movie.

See, in all honesty, this isn't even a small inconsistency...in fact, its actually a pretty large one. Thing is some people are saying its because he randomly got some kind of small adapter, however something like this would need to be explained and would really only go hand in hand with Red getting a new weapon...which by the way he does not.

And now that my rant is over I shall go on to talk about the actual film and story itself. Now most people seem to have mixed feelings about this movie. I quite simply really, really liked it. It's not often I find myself actually laughing at this type of movie, and enjoying it, but I did. In fact its one of those rare Dark Knight occasions, and probably the last for the year as more Hollywood drivel prepares to hit the big screens.

The acting is this movie was brilliant, and the guy that plays the Prince, superb. The make up was awesome and very believable on such characters as Red. And as for Ron Perlman, that guy is highly under-rated as an actor and an action hero. In fact most people seem to forget he was in Alien Resurrection and Blade II...in fact, seems he likes to be in sequels...hmm.

I was however disappointed that David Hyde-Pierce didn't do the voice of Abe Sapien unlike in the first movie, a voice that definitely suited the character, however the voice acting was above par, and if you hadn't seen the previous movie, then you honestly won't care.

Also, a new addition to the Hellboy cast was the infamous and brilliant Seth MacFarlane doing the voice of the robot whom I believe was called Krauss...though I am not entirely sure of the accuracy of that statement. Anyway, his character was completely different the usual Family Guy and American dad that MacFarlane has introduced us to over the past few years, and I was pleasantly surprised at the limitless acting skills that this man possesses.

The story to this new movie was very interesting and successfully managed to keep my attention for the majority of the film, with the random comedy scenes, great action scenes and fantastic general story telling. And even though there will be a lot of people who will disagree with my opinion of this movie, I actually don't care. This is one of those movies that you will either love or hate, and for me this is definitely one of the best movies I have seen all year...not that there have been many contenders.

Spider-Man 2 Movie Review

After the lacklustre first film, "Spider-Man 2" proves to be a breath of fresh air and finally establishes Spiderman for the hero he really is. This film trounces every aspect that was lacking in the first film by having a solid, unique story, a great journey for the hero, a superb villain and of course, spectacular set pieces and much improved effects.

In many ways the first film was limited in its appeal to male adolescents. This film however puts Peter Parker in a position where he asks himself is it worth doing what he's doing? Has he lost himself to the hero he has made? Who is he away from being Spiderman? It's an age-old journey that's easily identifiable, with the concept of "being Spiderman" substituted for any number of things in our lives; careers, personal lives, etc. The theme running through this film is that it's not worth being something if you lose touch with who you are inside because eventually you'll not only lose yourself, but you'll ultimately won't be able to be who you want to be. In this case, Peter Parker loses touch with himself and his friends because he is so focused on being Spiderman, and in the process starts losing his ability to effectively be Spiderman, losing the strength of his powers. Halfway through the film he gives up being Spiderman so he can just be Peter Parker. An identity crisis is a strong foundation for any story, but especially for this one, which is executed with precision and care by director Sam Raimi, making for a solidly entertaining film with heart and finally establishes Spiderman as a distinctly separate superhero to the rest (side note: sure Superman gave up his powers in "Superman II" but that was for love).

One of the huge improvements in this instalment is the villain. "Doc Ock" just kicks ass, and is played with empathy by Alfred Molina. This time, the villain's face is not hidden behind a big green ugly mask so we get to see his menace (and soft side), making for more effective and powerful scenes. He's also just plain tougher and meaner; watching him use his robot controlled tentacles to climb up buildings, grab people and toss them around, and rip through bank vaults is just plain cool, something that the Green Goblin just didn't do in the first film.

Tobey Maguire actually steps up to the plate in this film and delivers a performance with range as Peter Parker. You really feel for his plight as he goes about trying to work out who he really is and wants to be. Kirsten Dunst is great again as Peter's love interest, as is James Franco (Harry) who this time has a lot more to play with in establishing a growing rift between himself and Peter.

The set pieces are also magnificent; Spiderman fighting Doc Ock on the side of a building is marvellous, and another fight scene between the two on a subway train is nothing short of spectacular. But for all its technical wizardy and whiz-bang stunts, the best parts of "Spider-Man 2" reside in the quieter moments as Peter tries to grapple with his identity. A touching dream-style sequence in which Peter discusses his love for Mary Jane contrasted with his responsibilities of being Spiderman with his dead uncle Ben is quite moving, and ultimately leads to the film's strongest scene where Peter drops his Spiderman costume in the rubbish bin and walks away in to the darkness.

This is an excellent film. Entertaining, well acted, brilliantly directed with strong themes we can all relate to.

Wedding Movies to Watch Together

There are two words that make most men cringe:Wedding Season. Why is that? Is it a fear of commitment? Is it a desire to avoid the battle between Bridezilla and Momthra? We're not entirely sure, so we put together a list of movies that you and your guy can watch together. They prove that weddings aren't necessarily the beginning of the end, and they can even be fun.

In order to make the list, the movie had to be mostly about a wedding (or series of weddings), it can't just have a tacked on wedding at the end (like the latest installment of certain adventure-archeology series). Also, the movie has to be something that a guy would watch with one of his buddies (buffer seat optional).

5) Honeymoon In Vegas

Before there was Indecent Proposal, Nicolas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker were approached with an offer they couldn't refuse. Cage stars as a commitment-phobe who gets browbeaten by SJP into a Vegas wedding (hmmm, sounds familiar . . . ). From there things go sideways, James Caan winds up winning SJP for 2 days, and Mr. Miyagi runs interference while Cage tries to get her back. Nic ultimately triumphs with the help of the Flying Elvises, Utah Chapter and a lil' Nevada wedding chapel. Weird that a Nicolas Cage movie ends up with hundreds of Elvis impersonators. Or in Las Vegas, he just can't escape that place.

4) Father Of The Bride

Sure, it's hard to call any movie featuring Diane Keaton dude-friendly (except The Godfather) but Steve Martin gives a fantastic performance as a man (George Banks) dealing with his mortality vis-à-vis his kids growing up. George eventually comes around, but not after fleeing from attack dogs, wearing a blue Armani tux, and letting his preteen son (Kieran Culkin) drive a car. On his path to breakdown, he lets the audience in on the collusion between the hot dog companies and the bun companies. Diane Keaton even manages to give some reasonable advice, plus Martin Short turns in one of his best performances as a wedding planner named Franck.

3) The Wedding Singer

It was the late 90's and everything Adam Sandler touched was gold. Instead of playing a rage-filled simpleton, Sandler stretched it to play an affectionate wedding singer that just wanted a wedding of his own. After getting left at the altar, Sandler decides that "love stinks, yeah, yeah" and doesn't get out of his funk until he falls in love with Drew Barrymore (does she ever age?) before she becomes Julia Guglia (pronounced goo-lea). Good showings from Christine Taylor and Billy Idol in this one. The movie was set in 1985, so there are a lot of those 'if we knew then what we know now moments' involving Van Halen and CD players. Evidently, someone liked this movie enough to put it on Broadway. Totally awesome edition.

2) So I Married An Axe Murderer

OK. This one is really more about the relationship between Mike Myers and Nancy Travis but the wedding is fairly important. Myers started his penchant for playing multiple characters in this movie. His beat poet character, Charlie, was always coming up with reasons to break up with the women he dated. And then he met Nancy Travis, whom he later suspected of being a black widow, "Jane, get me off this crazy thing called love." The wedding's reception feature's Myers as Charlie's Scottish dad belting out Rod Stewart hits until his bagpiper passes out. We also learn that the world is run by a group called the Pentavirate and that Colonel Sanders puts an addictive ingredient in his chicken that makes you crave it fortnightly.

1) Wedding Crashers

How can you have a wedding movie list for dudes without Wedding Crashers? This flick hit the theaters and launched the so-called Frat Pack into superstardom. And made guys realize, 'hey, I can totally get laid at that wedding, sweet.' Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn were perfectly cast as 2 charming lotharios out to crash 1,000,000 wedding and rock them all. This one has too many quotes to even mention and Will Ferrell's appearance may be one of the greatest film cameos of all time. The deleted scenes feature an incredible karaoke version of Nena's '99 Red Balloons.' And, yep, a little poetry courtesy of Sarah McLachlan. This movie went on to make 285 million bucks in the theater which places it just behind My Big Fat Greek Wedding as the best selling wedding movie of all time. Enjoy, you motor boatin' son-of-a-gun.

-Before drawing anything, figure out the basic theme of your movie. Will it be a comedy or action packed? Imagine your characters and then develop a plot.

- Now create a storyboard. It is not necessary to have the drawings of your storyboard to be the perfect ones. Rough drawings will do at this stage.

- A neatly laid out script is a must to give life to the characters of your storyline. Hence first write a script. Make sure to include everything as every small detail counts. Give stress on dialogues.

- Now conceptualize and write in detail the profiles of the various characters. It will help you to develop the story further.

- With the script ready, you are ready to begin the real animation work. Decide the animation technique you want to use. You can choose between flipbooks and the traditional method. Event Horizon Movie Review

I feel that "Event Horizon" is severely underrated. The film wasn't successful at the box office, and I was actually lucky enough to catch it at the cinema when it was in it's first run before it disappeared quickly thereafter. Aside from a dreadful ending, this film contains some of the most deeply atmospheric and terrifying moments put in to a sci-fi/thriller for quite some time. Production design is first rate - all the ships feel and look very real and capture a very strong science-fiction feel (kind of the way the early Alien films did - but obviously not as good as those). It's actually a decent directing job by Paul Anderson (the director of such 'classics' as "Mortal Kombat" and "Soldier"... enough said). It's a shame this film didn't get the recognition it deserved, but at least on DVD format, it can still be enjoyed for what it is - a chilling, terrifying haunted house film set on a spaceship with some superb sci-fi images and production design.

There are some high quality actors in this film and they mostly do a decent job but nothing remarkable. This film is more about the terror and the production design. Laurence Fishburne is particularly good, as are most of the crew. Sam Neill is a bit of a let down - he just doesn't ever seem comfortable or natural, especially as he becomes the personification of evil on the ship by film's end. Maybe the material just didn't work him. The music is chilling and well composed... except for the opening and end credits which has a bizarre techno dance beat which is completely out of whack with the rest of the film (what was going on there?!). There's an attempt to go into Exorcist territory in some moments, particularly towards the end, and there's a bit of blood spilt. I'm not a fan of the latter but it should please the horror buffs.

I've already said it but I'll say it again; this film has a dreadful ending. After a fabulous build-up of tension and anxiety (combined with some very atmospheric space scenes), it turns out that the terror comes from the spaceship having gone to hell and back. That's it. The ship could have gone anywhere in the universe and it goes to hell. How original. Maybe some people will go for it but I felt it wasn't interesting enough (and definitely not original), and when the big reveal is made, it's so overblown, over-acted and over the top that it's kind of silly. A good, solid ending is a must for a film and it's amazing that this unimaginative, overblown ending still doesn't manage to kill the film. The rest of the film is of high quality and absolutely worth the ride.

A very solid, quality film that delivers on almost every aspect of the sci-fi, thriller and horror genres.

Formulaic Cinema

Basically you need a hero/heroine, some sort of plot, a climax and a moral. That's the basis for most recipes as far as screenwriting goes. The problem is some do it better than others.

Sometimes it's painful watching such movies. The moment you realize you can predict every major step along the way, the movie loses part of its charm (unless that's what it intended) and you end up either walking out (though I've personally never done so) or trying to find the good in all the rest: camera work, soundtrack, acting, etc.

There are many, many rules, and following them is something nonconformists in Hollywood adore. Whether it's the token black guy dying (there was a brief period of time when he was allowed to live, maybe even be the hero - see Deep Blue Sea, House On Haunted Hill), or the innocent girl who survives (see most slasher movies) horrors have done it over and over again, yet people still go see them (apparently hope dies last). The bad boy reformed story is as old as time (A Walk To Remember), so is the good boy gone bad, then repenting one (see 21 most recently). And don't get me started on the Chosen One plot. Every martial arts movie out there has something of the sort, so do most comic books (Wanted is the latest one), though I am partial to it, and sometimes, just sometimes we get something different (even if it's a parody - Kung Fu Hustle). I'm not going into teen comedy teritory. Apart from horrors those are the most formulaic of all. Romantic comedies are also right up there, break up to make up plot included. Even the send offs are pretty unoriginal (it's a TV movie, but still - Romantic Comedy 101). Sci-fi is possibly the most original of them (not denying it follows some of the basic themes of adventure, but then again, we're not talking about themes here).

And it doesn't really stop with scripts. Directors are often easily influenced. Roger Ebert, in his review of Battlefield Earth(which uses ) stated the director "has learned from better films that directors sometimes tilt their cameras, but he has not learned why". The unnecessary use of CGI is also quite an issue. Just because someone else does it, it doesn't mean you need it.

You might say it's hard being original, the old "it's all been done before" excuse. But as I've already stated, do it well, and people will overlook cliches, familiar storylines and the likes. Citizen Kane is considered the best movie ever made because it was the first one to use certain camera techniques or tell a certain story. I'm certain Welles wasn't the first to make his camera look up at characters, but he did it with purpose, and it worked. This was due to the revolutionary digital playback method. However there was still the problem that you had to trudge over to the dvd store to get your dvd to rent or buy. And once dvds started to get a bit old, we discovered that careless use by a previous renter could cause scratches which made the picture skip. Also you might find that the movie of your choice was not available or was not in stock at your local store.

Renting or buying dvds on the internet from Amazon or one of the large supermarket chains that are sent to you through the mail seemed to provide the solution to some of these problems. You could sit at home with no hassle and your movies would come to you. But this time, although you always get a vast range to choose from, the problem is that you do not get the movie right away you have to wait for the postman to bring it to you. By that time you might not be in the mood for that movie!

But now it really does seem like ALL the problems have been solved.

Blu-ray players capable of showing picture-in-picture - a feature called "bonus view" - have only just started to appear. National Treasure Book of Secrets Movie Review

Nicholas Cage returns again as the swashbuckling historian Benjamin Gates. This time he is in search of the information to clear his family name following his grandfather's implication with Abraham Lincoln's murder. In this film it is important to appreciate that many of the subtly performed stunts are not possible but for the purpose of making this film interesting they have to be. However, some of the action scenes in this film and the areas they investigate are spectacular.

Jon Voight and Helen Mirren both providing good cameos. Gates sidekick plays his role well again and his humour provides timely breaks between the action. This film is on a par with the first film. Like the first film what this one lacks in story and realism it makes up for with good acting and fast paced action that everyone will enjoy. They have chosen to stick with pretty much the same cast as the first film and this works well as the relationships in the first film are developed further.

Like the first there are plenty of one liners slipped into the film that will make you laugh. Although, the action is intense at times it is suitable for children and adults of all ages. Ultimately, this film is not a classic but I would say that was worth the money and I would recommend others seeing it to. There are rumours that if this film performs well in the box office, which it is in America, that they plan to make a third film in this series.

This film focuses on the story of two childhood friends, Amir and Baba. The friends are forced to drift apart when one emigrates from Afghanistan to California. However, when Amir returns he finds that his friend is dead but his friend's son is in desperate need of assistance. This film is on the first book of the best selling series of books by Khaled Hosseini.

The film highlights the issues of life post USSR in Afghanistan and the influence of the Taliban. This is a story of a boy's development into adulthood and his battle to save his friend's son. The film is intense and compelling and kept be interested throughout despite the length of the movie. However, those who have read the book may feel that this adaption does not do the book justice. If possible you should the book before seeing the film so the film is easier to follow. The directing is good, as would be expected from the director of both Stranger Than Fiction and Finding Neverland. The acting is solid throughout with no exceptional performances from any one particular member of the cast.

Moreover, this film is subtitled and if you are the type of person who does not enjoy reading in the cinema then you are unlikely to enjoy this. Furthermore, the film is quite harrowing and intense and times which may not be suitable for all. Ultimately, this is a good film but the subtitles and harrowing nature of some sections of the plot means that it is not suitable for everyone.

My Blueberry Night Movie Review

This film about drama and romance features a debut performance for the singer Norah Jones. She plays Elizabeth a young woman who decided to take a trip and mend her broken heart and in the process rediscover her inner-self. In the process she leaves behind her deep friend Jude Law. This is the first full English language film directed by Wong Kar-Wai.

The plot of the film is primarily focused on romance with little in the way of action making this film more suited to girls in particular with the presence of Jude Law. This film boasts quite a good cast yet the least distinguished of the actors, Norah Jones, plays the lead. While she does relatively well she is often overshadowed by the Hollywood giants around her, in particular Natalie Portman who is brilliant. There is some humor to keep the audience interested and the some of the dialogue is very good. However, there was still not enough in this film for me and i would have rather seen Natalie Portman as the lead and Norah Jones as the cameo appearance.

This film is being billed as similar to Love Actually and it is true that the films are similar and if you enjoyed Love Actually you are likely to enjoy this film. Ultimately, even though the film was relatively short it was boring for long periods of the film as Norah Jones meanders around trying to rediscover herself. Jude Law, Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman and even Norah Jones provide solid performances but not enough to make this film good. After this film Kar-Wai may return to foreign language which is directing style was better suited to. If you enjoy this films of this genre it is worth going to see but if not i would steer clear.

The Bucket List Movie Review

This film focuses on two men who are terminally ill with cancer and while sharing a room they become friends and decide to write a list of things that they want to do before they die. Jack Nicholson is a rich billionaire and owner of the hospital which means he can afford to a whole lot of crazy things that most people would never be able to do such a sky diving. There is a period of lull during the film as the actors do the various things on the list. The acting by both Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson who themselves are quite old is fantastic and they both showed they are both two of the best actors in Hollywood.

Morgan Freeman also acts as the narrator making the film incredibly easy to follow and allowing you to sit back, relax and enjoy. Moreover, the relationship and apparent friendship between the two characters makes the film all the more enjoyable. This film is funny and utterly hilarious in places. The humour is tasteful and suitable for most ages and both boys and girls will laugh. However, there plot of the film is morbid and as the film nears the end it becomes very sad as the characters approach the end of their lives. By this point you are almost friends with the characters as well and the more suitable viewer may cry. There is not that much romance and little intense action but that would be inappropriate and despite this the film still has something for everyone. Ultimately, this film is surprisingly good and i would recommend going to see it especially if you enjoy a film where the actors can actually act compared to some modern comedies.

This films starts at the turn-of-the-century petroleum boom in California. Daniel Plainview and his son have come to a small town in search of oil and riches. In this pursuit he is successful but he strikes liquid gold but the corruption, violence and treachery that result will inevitably alter the lives of many, and threaten the sacred bond between a father and son in a small western town.

This film has been nominated a number of Oscars including best film and best actor for Daniel Day Lewis. This film is Oscar material but that does mean that it is not also the most comfortable viewing for the audience. There are some quite intense scenes that may intimidate some members of the audience. There are a number of slow scenes that may leave some sections of the audience quite bored.

However, in my opinion this film is deserving of its multiple BAFTA awards and the Oscars which are soon to follow. Daniel Day Lewis, who is the lead, is spectacular and provides an acting masterpiece. Although, the rest of the cast is probably unknown to most cinema goers they still provide solid performances.

The main positive about this film other than the performance of Daniel Day Lewis is the dialogue. Through brilliant dialogue the film is easy to follow for an attentive audience, there is horror in the dialogue and humor, a difficult combination to master.

Ultimately, the length, intensity, slow nature of slow scenes and plot make this film unsuitable for most audiences. However, if you want to see a film with good acting, dialogue worth listening to unlike some modern films and one of the best films this year then see this film. Hopefully, the Oscars get it right this year!

Penelope Movie Review

When I went to see this film I was surrounded by women with their daughters and I was beginning to fear the worst. This a really nice feel good film but for me this was not a good movie. However, most of the audience did seem to enjoy the film and I heard some asking when they could buy it on DVD. There is little action and little humor making this film only suitable for the young children rather than their parents. There was one scary moment but this was so brief that if you blink you could have missed it.

The acting was actually surprisingly good and wasted on most of the audience. The two leads are lovable characters and hopefully will star if more high profile films. As the U suggests there is almost nothing to make this film remotely adult. The dialogue is laughable at times because of how innocent some of the lines.

Like all good child movies the plot also serves to deliver some valuable life lessons such as the value of confidence in one's abilities. Moreover, the ending of the story like the rest of the plot was well constructed and good. However, there was not enough action or humor for me. Ultimately, I did not really enjoy this film but it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. The acting was good the leads were sweet and the story was nice making this a good family film but not suitable for a teenage audience, there were also few young boys in the cinema but I do not know why this was. Definitely worth a family outing to the cinema or buying on DVD as this is the kind of family film you can watch every Christmas.

Juno Movie Review

The film starts with a young girl named Juno MacGuff having sex with her best friend Paulie Bleeker and then surprisingly falling pregnant. Juno, a tomboyish girl is played brilliantly by Ellen Page in her first real major role and hopefully she will be appearing in more films soon.

In contrast, Paulie, as the name suggests is a more feminine character played by Michael Cera who you will remember from Superbad. After the initial shock of the pregnancy and telling her parents they decide to give the baby away to a married couple who can not have kids. With Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman playing the role of the parents.

There are complications along the way but I will not reveal as it will ruin the plot. The main plus point of the film is the brilliant acting from the whole cast you actually feel like all of the characters are real and that they could be your own best friend.

Moreover, this film is filled with laughs from start to finish and on the whole the humour is tasteful and will appeal to most people. It is no wonder this film has been nominated for numerous oscars which is unusual for films in this genre. This is the type of film that you could watch over and over again and i will definitely be buying the DVD.

The relationship between Juno and Paulie is hilarious and the teenage jokes will make both teenagers and adults laugh. This film has little action but plenty of romance which probably makes this film slightly more suited to girls although most boys will probably enjoy it. My advice is to see this film, NOW!

Miramax Films presents a film written and directed by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen. It is a critically acclaimed 2007 film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy. The film features Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem.

If you like the kind of film that surprises you and takes away your breath at the same time,this is it. It tells the story of a drug deal gone very wrong and the ensuing cat-and-mouse drama as three men crisscross each others paths in the desert landscape of 1980 West Texas. Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter stumbles upon some dead bodies, a stash of heroin and more than $2 million in cash near the Rio Grande.

The local sheriff, Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), tells of the changing times as the region becomes increasingly violent. The key character of Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) and his weapon of choice — cattle gun — are introduced as he escapes police custody and steals a car by using the cattle gun to kill the car's driver. But at the same time a hunter hunting pronghorn come across a collection of corpses and one Mexican near death which was the result of a drug deal gone bad. The hunter Llewwlyn Moss [Josh Brolin] also finds two million dollars in a suitcase and decides that he will keep the money and leave the Mexican to die, but has a change of heart and returns with some water for the man.

But this good deed sets off a cat and mouse game in which the hunter and the hunted switch roles as a gang of Mexicans,Chigurh,Moss and Bell chase each other and the two million dollars across the Texas and Mexican landscape. But unbeknown to Moss, Chigurh who was hired to retrieve the money has a transponder hidden in it. And Chigurh, who is a professional hit man, will kill anyone who gets in his way.

In the meantime Moss, not knowing anything about the transponder, sends his wife Carla Jean [Kelly MacDonald] out of town and jumps from motel to motel trying to elude not only Chigurh but also the Mexicans. While all of this is happening, Bell main concern is to try and protect Moss after he finds him. Chigurh is closing in on Moss because of the tracking device.

Chigurh ends up killing some of the Mexicans and a rival hit-man named Carson Wells who is played by Woody Harrelson. Moss arranges a meeting with Carla Jean in El Pasco to give her the money and tries to get her out of danger. All of the action now takes place at the motel when all of the main characters converge there, but not at the same time. Moss is killed by the Mexicans in a bloody shootout. Sheriff Bell shows up and enters a room to discover that the vent covers have been removed and knows that the money had been removed and then leaves, not knowing that Chigurh is hiding in that same motel.

Bell finally gets the opportunity to visit his uncle Ellis [Barry Corbin] and informs him that he is going to retire because he is getting leery of the changing times, but Ellis accuses him of just being vain. Some time later Chiguth confronts the widowed Carla Jean and offers her the same "coin flip"opportunity that he had offered the gas station owner, Carla Jean refuses and in the next scene it shows Chigurh examining the soles of his boots, as if to indicate that he had committed another murder. He ends up in a car accident but he manages to elude the police and escapes again.

At the very end of this story Bell is reflecting on the many choices he had in his life. He tells his wife[Tess Harper] about the two dreams that he has had while heis experiencing an uneasy retirement at home.

Highly praised by critics, the film received several Golden Globe Award nominations. Roger Ebert called it "as good a film as the Coen brothers... have ever made and gave it a four star review and it appeared on many of critics top 10 list of 2007.It took Best Picture at 2008 Critics’ Choice Awards.

Cloverfield Kept Secret Better Than Area 51

Everyone knows just how secretive film studios can be with their properties. They usually just release a still photo of filming, or a shot out of the movie and call it a teaser poster and then give a very vague description of the plot.

Then, within four months of release time (perhaps even longer), they release a full length trailer and by then so many websites have spoiled the movie for everyone that people only see it to know whether or not it lives up to the hype. In early 2007, J.J. Abrams, creator of the hit television program Alias, announced that he was working on a new movie.

And that is all that was revealed. At the time it seemed like no big deal. Just a project that would probably be announced in a week or so. But, no announcement came. Here and there people were reporting that casting was underway for the new film. But no one knew what it was.

There were no script leaks, plot speculations or anything. The only thing anyone was capable to find out, and even then it was heavily unconfirmed, was that a possible false title that it would film under was Cloverfield.

In the summer of that same year, in the previews of the movie Transformers, a very interesting movie trailer was shown before the beginning of the movie. The trailer consisted of an apartment party where a person is walking around with a video camera.

Suddenly the very loud sound of an animal war is heard and the apartment begins to shake. The partygoers run outside and see a large explosion followed by part of the Statue of Liberty being thrown at the partygoers. From there the trailer ended with no title. Only the Bad Robot studio logo was present. The Cloverfield phenomenon was officially underway.

J.J. Abrams finally came forward and told that the movie would be a monster movie unlike anything the world has seen. When asked why he chose to work on a monster movie his response was that he had taken a trip to Japan and walked into a toy store with his son. He looked around the store and noticed that the majority of toys were Godzilla related.

To which he added that he felt it was time that there was an American equivalent to Godzilla. Now, with less than three months until the much publicized release date, we know little more now then we did at the beginning. This has led many to wonder whether or not this is a healthy marketing campaign, seeing as how a large portion of the film's awareness was spread through word of mouth. However, producers are confident that it is the same word of mouth that will make the movie a rousing success.

Juno And The Restless Virgins

Since I wrote a novel based around sex education, I've tried to pay attention to other books and movies that do the same. I reviewed Tom Perrotta's The Abstinence Teacher, which I thoroughly enjoyed. This time, I'm reviewing Juno, a movie I enjoyed so much I saw it twice, the first time with my wife, the second time alone, so I could take a more insightful look at the story.

Juno is the story of a pregnant teenager who is trying to make sense of her difficult circumstances. Ellen Page, who plays Juno, makes the movie. She's not only funny, but she appears wise without taking things too seriously. Juno is the geeky guy's best friend, someone you can talk to, jam with, but you'd forget she was a girl unless she reminded you - and that's how she gets pregnant. She reminded the cheese on her macaroni, before he ever knew he was.

I enjoyed Juno because it was different; it was not a formulaic high school drama of fill-in-the-blank (studs, geeks, misfits, beauty queens, etc) against the cliques or the teachers. Nor was the movie a preachy lecture where everyone in one person's life imposes values and passes sentence. Juno was not held up as a poster child for teen sex gone wrong. That would have lost the teen/college audience for sure.

Instead, Juno is a movie that a father and teenage daughter can watch together, and share laughs at each other's expense after it ends. Election (1999), which starred Matthew Broderick, and was based on another Perrotta best-seller, is the only other high school based movie that comes close to the same achievement. No surprise; I saw both movies in person and they played well to all ages.

I could open my old high school yearbook, or anyone else's for that matter, and probably find one girl like Juno, maybe two, but certainly no more. She's noted as an oddball, but doesn't stand out in any special way — except for her wit — and her untimely pregnancy. During a rare scene in school, pregnant Juno attracts silence and stares as the crowds allow her to pass undisturbed, although it is clear that she has been branded a marked woman.

But Juno is remarkably poised for her age; she's thought through what she wants to do — put the baby up for adoption - and she's handling the pain with surprising humor. Juno is the bravest girl in school, and she's considered the freak. It's unclear why that happens; Juno's boyfriend/best friend's mother was the only person who had given Juno a reputation. Maybe Juno's classmates are afraid, not for her, but themselves.

Maybe the movie's writer's have left that for us to figure out.

It's good meat for a father-daughter talk after the movie's over.

After seeing Juno for the second time, I picked up a book, Restless Virgins, a non-fiction story about teenage hook-ups at a nationally respected New England prep school. This was a rare opportunity to take a back-to-back look at a movie and book along similar themes.

The authors of Restless Virgins, Abigail Jones and Marissa Miley, both graduates of the school, told a true story that appeared to be more like the formulaic high school movies: take the social cliques of the school, peer pressures, and mix them in with a scandal reminiscent of the Duke Lacrosse case. Only this time, the boys are expelled while the girl's reputation is embarrassingly showcased in court. The school is spared no embarrassment as well; a headmaster is forced to concede that hooking up has been par for the course for some time.

I understand why a publisher took on Restless Virgins; the school is one of the nation's elite and its' students considered among the best of the best at gaining admission to the most selective colleges. We expect to be surprised when they behave just like "public school kids" who lack the same advantages. We expect them to abide by a code of conduct, inside and outside school, for the good of the institution, and for the sake of tradition.

But Restless Virgins showed me that the elite are just like anyone else, except that they can afford better lawyers. All high schools, public or private have their cliques and they change, while the traditions that should probably die take a long time to go away. This came out quite strongly in Virgins. The students were ready to ignore, or let go of the school's past, while the administrators were asleep at the switch, incapable of cleaning up the mess.

Unlike Juno, there were no pregnant young women in Restless Virgins. But Juno MacGuff didn't see sex as a game, or something she had to do, but something she wanted to do, with a guy she really cared about. The fictional Juno was far more mature, and also far more interesting, than the real-life cast in Restless Virgins.

Pan's Labyrinth a Great Foreign Language Film

This particular film has shown that spanish story tellers and directors have a lot to share with the international film community. Pan's Labyrinth also known as "El Laberinto del Fauno" in Spanish, has a very well written story about a young girl "Ofelia" who lives a fantasy about becoming a princess and finding her true father.

While it sounds like the perfect story for "children" the plot turns darker a few minutes in the movie. Ofelia's mother is pregnant and she has complications which make her feel extremely sick. She is now living with Captain Vidal, who during the post-civil war period viciously hunts rebels in Spain.

Captain Vidal is in fact the villain of the story who kills people who are against his ideals, one of the scenes at the beginning of the film is specially brutal and definitively not suitable for children. The only trace of humanity this villain has, surfaces when he talks about his son. He treats his wife and step daughter as if they were strangers, so the relationship between them is not very good.

Ofelia, who's the main character of the story has great imagination which allows her to escape into a fantasy world every time an imaginary "fairy" visits her. During her first visit to a labyrinth near her home, she meets Pan (a faun-like Greek God) who lets Ofelia know that she is the daughter of a King who's been waiting for her, but in order to meet her father she has to complete several tests.

One of the tests involved getting a key from an overgrown toad who explodes after she tricks him into eating some magical stones; at the same time this happens, Captain Vidal's servants and his personal doctor are working on a plan to help the rebels, provide them with food and medical supplies. The second test involves using the key to recover a dagger from a dangerous place which is guarded by a terrifying creature, this test is explained to her by Pan who offers Ofelia a "mandrake root" which is suppose to help her mother through her birth complications, but unfortunately, she dies after she gives birth to her son.

Ofelia then heads towards this place and retrieves the dagger but not without first tasting a few grapes (which was specially prohibited by the Faun), at this point the guardian creature awakens and kills two of the fairies which were with Ofelia, who tried to warn her and protect her against this creature.

When she explains the accident to the Faun, he gets mad and disappears. Meanwhile, Captain Vidal captures one of the rebels and tortures him so bad that the doctor has no other option but to kill the prisoner due to the gravity of his wounds. At this point the Captain realizes that the doctor had helped the rebel by killing, so he gets killed as well. After several hardships, the Faun decides to forgive Ofelia and explains the third and last test. She is now required to take her baby brother with her to Pan's Labyrinth.

When she finally gets a hold of his little brother, the Captain who is very protective of his son, discovers that Ofelia is trying to kidnap the baby so he goes after her without realizing he had been drugged by Ofelia. The rebels attacked his domain at the same time but he had no intentions of helping his soldiers, he just wanted his son back. After entering the labyrinth Ofelia learns that the third tests involves killing her baby brother in order to meet her father again, she completely refuses and the Faun disappears, this is when the Captain reaches her takes the baby and shoots her. He was later on killed by the rebels.

The ending is bitter-sweet since right before Ofelia died she meets with her parents and the Faun who explained the purpose of the third test, which was intended to test her capacity to risk her own life in order to protect an innocent. Since she did exactly that she was able to meet her parents and become a princess, but in the real world she died.

This movie is without a doubt one of the best recent foreign films which portrays a fantasy world meant to be seen, analyzed and enjoyed by adults, hence the MPAA's R-rating.

Movie Review - Sweeney Todd

Having never seen the stage version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, I can't speak to the fidelity the film shares with the play. That said, let there be no doubt that Tim Burton has crafted a true piece of musical cinema from Stephen Sondheim's bloody masterpiece. To their discredit, early previews have hedged a bit regarding the singing in the film. In them we only see Johnny Depp canting some recitative as he prowls the streets of London. While this scene is certainly in the movie, it's barely representative of the actual film which contains at least a dozen fully-staged numbers and only intermittent dialogue.

As the former Benjamin Barker, Depp is magnificent as Todd. His voice may lack the thunder that would be expected on stage, but on the big screen it's more than suitable. Purists may find it a little ragged and flat at times--Michael Crawford needn't worry about Depp--but it's an ideal manifestation of the corrupting anger and rotting vengeance that fill Todd's soul. The same can be said for Helena Bonham Carter as the fiendish Mrs. Lovett. Sure she will occasionally descend into something approaching a hectoring screech, but consider for a moment that she's a baker who grinds people into meat and serves them up in piping hot pies!

Voices aside, both actors deliver rich, complex performances. The focus and intensity that Depp brings to his role is riveting. Within minutes of the film's opening there is no doubt that Depp will have his revenge and have it with gusto. Taking a step back from the film, realize that Todd is a thoroughly despicable character. He often kills indiscriminately, but Depp is so powerful as Todd that you eventually begin to relish his countless murders. Carter's Mrs. Lovett is, perhaps, even more of a psychopath. Slicing a throat is one thing. Butchering a man and then serving him up for dinner is quite another. Nevertheless, you delight in her, too.

As for the killings, Burton stages them in spectacularly gory fashion. The phrase 'geysers of blood' is often used casually when describing a violent film. In Sweeney Todd the phrase is explicitly correct. Depp is often obscured under the high-powered jets of plasma that repeatedly erupt from his customer's necks. Amazingly, these scenes aren't even the most disturbing. Once Todd finishes giving a 'shave', he dumps the corpse down a hole where it cracks loudly at the bottom as the skull splinters and the neck breaks cleanly. It's all completely over the top and, of course, wonderful, hilarious, inspired.

The same can be said for the film as a whole. In Sweeney Todd, Tim Burton has found material that meshes perfectly with his artistic sense. You could call it a horror film or a screwball comedy and you'd be right both times. The design is, as would be expected from a Burton picture, lavish and spectacular. The supporting cast, especially Alan Rickman and Timothy Spall, are superb. Only the love story between Johanna and Anthony falls a little flat. It's a minor quibble, though, in an otherwise outstanding film. Sweeney Todd joins Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands as Burton's finest work. It may eventually even be considered his best.

I Robot

I have been writing reviews and expressing morals for a few of my favorite movies, which as it turns out, are mostly dramas and animations. Just to even things out, I want to mention a sci-fi movie this time. I particularly liked I, Robot because it had action, it had thought, it had a point, it was extremely funny in parts, it was not overly violent and guess what, there was no love scene. While sometimes I think no movie is complete without a love scene, because I am a hopeless romantic, sometimes, it really is not necessary and it gets overly used.

The film is set in Chicago in the year 2035, where robots have been developed to the point where they are used in nearly every household. The only person in all of Chicago who does not have a robot is homicide detective Del Spooner (Will Smith), who has an intense dislike for robots due to a personal experience with their lack of humanity.

The movie starts to gather momentum with the beginning of an investigation that lands in Detective Spooner's lap. A Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell) appears to have committed suicide by jumping from his office window. Dr. Lanning was the inventor of the Three Laws of Robotics, the laws by which all robots are bound in order to protect humans, and co-founder of U.S. Robotics (USR), a highly successful company that specializes in robotic technology.

USR have just released a new line of robots called the NS-5. Each robot is outfitted with an uplink to URS's central positronic brain V.I.K.I (Virtual Interactive Kinetic Intelligence). The more Detective Spooner investigates, the more he believes that Dr. Lanning's death was not suicide. When Detective Spooner examines Dr. Lanning's office an NS-5 robot bursts from hiding and flees.

When Spooner interrogates the robot from Dr. Lanning's Office, he finds out that this robot is quite unique; he even has a name, Sonny. During the interview Sonny displays emotions such as anger and fear, qualities that robots do not possess. Before Sonny can say anything incriminating, he is taken to be decommissioned by the CEO of USR.

After careful consideration and a search of Dr. Lanning's house which nearly gets him killed, Detective Spooner begins to think that something was threatening Lanning and that Lanning was trying to tell him that something is wrong with the robots.

There have long been debates about whether the development of technology is a positive step for humanity or if indeed we are fuelling our own laziness and destruction. I guess the thing to remember is that we as humans do not always think rationally and logically like computers, that weigh up pro's and con's, fastest routes, best results. We usually base decisions on feelings and past experiences. If we were to consider things like a computer, it would probably be better to have studied something different at university because it is worth more money, or it is probably better to buy only white cars because they are more practical, or there would not be any other food except meat and vegetables. I think it all comes down to the importance of finding the perfect balance between evolving to make lives better and creating machines to feed our inability to control our own lives.

Roll-up for the 13th Annual Palm Beach Festival

The 13th Annual Palm Beach International Film Festival is due to take place in April 2008 and organisers are hoping to attract even more stars and industry insiders than in previous years, including such international superstars as Anthony Hopkins, Faye Dunaway and Michael Caine.

During the week of April 10th to 17th scores of films will be showcased at the festival, drawing many leading movie actors to the town. Last year over 20,000 filmgoers attended the many events and even more enthusiasts are expected this year. In addition, the world’s movie press contingent will inevitably pack the town hot in pursuit of the stars’ and dreaming of an exclusive interview, or at least some gossip.

The Palm Beach International Film Festival (PBIFF) was the brainchild of Commissioner Burt Aaronson and local philanthropist George Elmore. Both had a vision of offering an exciting cultural experience for the Palm Beach area, and at the same time providing a tremendous fundraiser for local educational institutions.

To date the not-for-profit organisation has donated over $1million to the film and television programs of local schools, community colleges and universities in the form of grants and scholarships. There are currently in excess of 2,600 students enrolled on the programs in the Palm Beach area and they are all eligible for their work to be shown at the Student Showcase of Films; screened during festival week.

Since 2003 the PBIFF has included a competitive element in an effort to expand its international status. Awards are given in such categories as; Best Director, Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Short Film, and lifetime achievement awards to motion picture legends are also distributed at the Festival.

But the fundraising is not just limited to the week of the festival. In addition there is also a 'Friends of the Film Festival' group that operates all year round, arranging many social gatherings for residents of Palm Beach and Roca Baton at which funds are raised for the educational support element of the festival. Many of their events, such as special Thanksgiving, Halloween and Christmas Eve parties take place at a local bar, club or hotel in Palm Beach, and prove great places for attendees to network in addition to providing substantial funds to the PBIFF.

The 2008 PBIFF looks set to be the most successful yet, with organisers promising big names but staying tight-lipped about whom exactly they will be. But, regardless of which stars do turn up it looks to be a record-setting year in terms of overall attendees, which is good news for the schools and colleges that benefit from the fund raising.

There are so many new and different kinds of movies that we watch today. We have so many different venues in which we can watch them. We can still go to the theatre and see them when they are first shown. We can wait until they come out on video and rent a copy at the local video store. We can rent a viewing for our television through our satellite, cable, or even our computer or telephone. It is all so amazing.

Even with all these options available to us, still one of the best ways to see an older movie is to simply catch it playing on television on one of the movie channels like Turner Classic Movies. This is one of the best channels to watch if you are an old movie buff. Of course there are other channels like the Family Channel and others that show plenty of old movies too.

The way that movies are made today is so much different than yester years. Kids today barely even know what a black and white movie is. If you ask my grand daughter, who is six, she would tell you that they are also grey. I ask her what she meant and she explained to me that those old movies were also grey. An amazing observation, why were they not ever called black, white, and grey movies?

The movie making special effects combined with all the computerized and digital technologies that is used to make them now is wonderful. It is easy to understand why kids might think watching the old classics a little boring. The new visual effects are so mesmerizing, but when you are watching a grand old classic like The Grapes of Wrath, is it any better or is it just different?

It is very important that young people do not miss seeing some of the great black, white, and grey films of the past. There is so much to be learned from some of them. Movies like To Kill a Mockingbird depicts an era gone by and the innocence of kids in that time. The Wizard of OZ is one of the greatest films ever made for kids and it is great in the color version, but many older people prefer the original black, white, and grey version.

The next time you have a Saturday or Sunday afternoon free, try to get your kids to sit down and watch whatever classic black and white film that might be on television. You will probably not have to worry about inappropriate language or content, and perhaps you can introduce them to an era of film making that no one should miss being exposed to.

Sony led the fight for blu-ray dvd players. Sony is a rare company that may actually benefit from it's success, mainly because higher production of the players could reduce component costs for the playStation 3, driving improved profitability for Sony's all-important video-game unit. Also adding to the momentum was the gradual increase in sales of Sony's playStation 3 home video-game console, which also works as a blu-ray player.

Blu-ray delivers crisp, clear high-definition pictures and sound, which are more detailed and vivid than existing video technology. Like the rewritable dvd formats, blu-ray uses phase change technology to enable repeated writing to the disc. It has has already won backing from major Hollywood studios, such as MGM Studios, Disney, and Buena Vista,as well as top technology firms like Dell, LG, Samsung and Phillips amongst others. But the absolutely genius part about Sony putting PS3 games on blu-ray disk (and they know this and planned it all along) means that the disk production ramped up very quickly to high volumes, thus softening the blow of the higher manufacturing costs of the new technology. Although the disc specification has been finalized, engineers continue working to advance the technology.

The next generation of dvds will hold high-definition video and sound. Likewise, consoles rely on single discs, so dvds that can hold six times more data mean much better,high-resolution games. Basically, blu-ray is a newer format of dvd with superior visual quality and storage space compared with standard dvds. While it is not compulsory for manufacturers, the Blu-ray Disc Association recommends that the disc drives should be capable of reading standard dvds for backward compatibility.

Entertainment decided to release movie discs only in the blu-ray format, joining Sony Pictures and Walt Disney Co. Blu-ray is the next-generation digital video disc. The next-generation dvd format blu-ray is winning more supporters than its rival, according to its backers. Just a few short weeks into 2008, blu-ray is now the dominant player in the game.

What Movie May Have Helped Shape The Energy Policy Of This Nation

The Three Mile Island accident was the most

significant in the history of the American

commercial nuclear power generating industry.

Living in Pennsylvania at the time of the

accident, I remember it as if it was yesterday.

It began on Wednesday,the 28TH of March 1979.It

took local, state and federal officals five days

to decide what to do with the residents of local

communities.

But on March 16th of that same year,just 12 days

before this incident at Three Mile Island in

Pennsylvania, a new movie "The China Syndrome"

had benn realised.

The China Syndrome is a thriller film which tells

the story of a reporter and cameraman who discover

safety coverups at a nuclear power plant. It stars

Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon, Michael Douglas, Scott

Brady, James Hampton, Peter Donat, Richard Herd,

and Wilford Brimley.

Basically the storyline of this movie is about a

reporter who finds what appears to be a cover-up

of safety hazards at a nuclear power plant.

TV news reporter Kimberly Wells (Fonda) and her

cameraman Richard Adams (Douglas) visit the

Ventana nuclear power plant outside Los Angeles as

part of a series of news reports on energy

production. While viewing the control room from an

observation room, the plant goes through a reactor

SCRAM. Shift supervisor Jack Godell (Lemmon)

notices what he believes to be an unusual

vibration during the SCRAM. Checking their gauges,

the control room staff finds that water levels in

the reactor core have risen to high levels; they

begin opening relief valves in an effort to

prevent too much water from damaging the plant.

Eventually Godell takes matter into his own hands

and ends up dead after being shot by members of

the local swat team after he took over the control

room.

The implication that the company's security

people are willing to kill to silence a

whistleblower echoes allegations made about the

death of Karen Silkwood, who died in a 1974

automobile accident while on her way to meet with

a reporter to disclose nuclear power safety

violations.

In the film, a physicist says that the China

Syndrome would render "an area the size of

Pennsylvania" permanently uninhabitable. It

resulted, however, in no deaths or injuries to

plant workers or members of the nearby community.

However, following the event, the number of

reactors under construction declined every year

from 1980 to 1998. The TMI accident, along with

the release of this movie, had a psychological

effect on the nation. Before the accident, 70

percent of the general public approved of nuclear

power. After it, support for nuclear power across

the country fell to about 50 percent, where it

remained for decades.

Both these devices are used for entertainment and are similar in many ways in terms of their practical purpose.
