Review Top Sheet: Tagline : hell on heels. A great watch worth your time and money with no vulgarity and sexual scenes which plague too many of Hollywood's movies these days. It's also been claimed that the story is based on Anna Wintour the editor-in-chief of Vogue. An article published in the New York Times 'fashion&style' (December28 2006) titled 'The devil likes attention' claims of editors in chief of Vogue and Marie Claire to produce a series of mini documentaries on life at the magazine due to the public's fascination on the subject and the great success and influence of genres like 'The Devil Wears Prada' and 'Ugly Betty'.

Will you like this film?

Yes if: you are in or into the high fashion industry yourself or any brand-conscious person for that matter.

No if: you're more of an adrenaline junkie and despise any genre near to 'girlie' stuff.

Maybe if: you've enjoyed watching The Princess Diaries. Here Anne Hathaway undergoes a somewhat different transformation and there is Meryl Streep instead of Julie Andrews to please.

Comments: This film is set in the bustling cosmopolitan of New York and Paris portraying the highs and lows of the multibillion dollar fashion industry and at the centre of it all playing an integral role is the fashion magazine 'runway' and the posh, hard-to-please woman whose running it Miranda Priestly (Streep) who is known for her attitude (dragon lady) and her second assistant Andrea Sachs (Hathaway) who tries very hard to fit in and morphs from a simple, plain-styled girl to a trendy glam queen. I personally feel that Streep landed this job as a subtle way of proving her critiques wrong, who for years had criticized her fashion sense especially during functions and awards and have been quoted for turning up with something two sizes bigger. When questioned in the Oprah show (together with Jim Carrey for the preview of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events) and asked what she'd like to say to her critiques. She just smiled and said 'no, that's okay, they're just doing their job'. Well here we have Ms. Streep at her very best gliding away in trendy, lavish and definitely 'in' attires.

Story Comments: The character of Andrea had no other choice and had to accept a job offer at Elias Clarke as a personal assistant to the editor-in-chief which doesn't involve any writing. She only sees this as a stepping stone to another journalism position within a year. And to please her boss she undergoes a total make-over with the help of Nigel (Stanley Tucci) the magazine's art director. And when she was forced to quit by the almost impossible task of getting the unpublished Harry Potter book for Miranda's twins, Andrea used her resources and talents and managed to get the manuscript hence leaving her boss awestruck. Then there is the character of Emily who initially appeared to be a self-centered unpleasant workmate who actually turned out to have a soft side and not-so-evil, in fact she's just trying to work very hard to achieve her own dream and gets crappy when Andrea does things faster. The movie sends a message to all those fashion-unsavy people who despises and regard it as something less than important. All in all the moral of the story is that everything comes with a cost and eventually hard work prevails and will be rewarded.

Dialogue Comments: The dialogue's up to date with phrases and jargons of the fashion industry with words like 'couture', 'stilettos' etc. worth mentioning here though is that Miranda Priestly 's dialogues are somewhat limited and she conveys most of her messages through her eyes, lips, facial expression and body language. Now they don't simply call her as one of the best actress of all times do they. She hardly raises her voice and speaks in a soft tone and yet manages to appear 'devilish'.

Substance Comments: Anne Hathaway charms the audience yet again with her smile and wide eyes. And mesmerizes everyone with another on-screen transformation, this time not into a princess or queen but from a nerdish girl into a fashion-savy, hip chick working for the immaculate 'devil- herself'. But there is also a lot of deciphering to do especially with Miranda since her character is not always verbal, like when she takes a second look at the 'new' Andrea and sort of acknowledges her fashion sense triumph. Or in the ending scene when Andrea nods and waves gratefully for her good reviews to a newspaper editor, she (Miranda) knowingly turns away and gets into her car but then smiles to herself as if seeing herself in Andrea many years ago when she was climbing the corporate ladder herself. Uncomplicated, easy to grasp, light-hearted story line.

Filmcraft comments: Great music to lift your spirits up, in par with each scene. Note the lyrics of the songs too; it says something about the characters. Beautifully caught sights of New York city and Paris with the intricacies and grandeurs of fashion life; of the rich and famous. Valentino and Heidi Klum makes an appearance .In short, big cars, big bucks and latest trends in the fashion industry.

A taste of the story: A girl who abandoned a Stamford law offer to purse her dream career in journalism somehow or rather manages to land a job as a second assistant to Miranda priestly ;the vicious, devilish boss of the top fashion magazine 'Runway'. Hoping that this will pave the way for her future advancement, she learns the hard way trying to please Miranda and eventually earns her respect and trust but with a price. Find out her trials and tribulations and if she continues to climb the corporate ladder of fame and fashion while her personal relationship goes up in smoke or will she retreat, resign and pursue what her heart desires; what she set out for in the beginning and return to her loved ones.

Tales of an Ancient Empire

It very well might have been 1982 in my living room that evening. Candles radiated a warm and comforting glow that lent a little mystery and magic to my ordinary domicile as the incense sparked to life and I slid the movie into the DVD player.

Could it be, after all these years, the miracle that was Netflix has brought home to me one of my most cherished childhood experiences? What would it look like 26 years after the memory of a young girl filed it away as one of the most magical and inspirational occurrences of her life?
I allowed my mind to wander as the player queued and I think I remembered the brilliant strength of the Hero, Talon, and his amazing sword of steel. I braced myself for the eerie beginning of a king and a witch who raise a sorcerer from his tomb, but mostly because I have chilling recollection of screaming faces and tortured souls that lined the coffin. This was the stuff that adventures were made of! This was the evil that spawned a hundred Dungeons and Dragons games...and I was immediately captured by the 'Sword and the Sorcerer' in the same way that I had always been.

I was a little girl again, in love with the Hero and wishing I were the woman he risked his life to be with for one night. I realized then how much the movie had influenced my writing as I grew into the process; how many games it inspired me to play along the way and how it set the bar for the fantasy worlds I would come to write.

The credits dwindled away and I watched every single one, of course. At the very end, when I knew it would be over, I saw a special message! Did they just say to watch for more of Talon's adventures in 'Tales of an Ancient Empire'?

I rushed to the internet, the glorious connection to all things great and small in the universe...And therein I found a special announcement. Albert Pyun, the original director of the 'The Sword and the Sorcerer' had indeed announced a special sequel, 'Tales of an Ancient Empire' to be released in 2010!

I don't know what it's about, and my only regret is that I didn't have a chance to work on the project in any way. I do know, for sure, that I'll be there with bells on. After all, two years is nothing after I've waited 26 for this occasion.

Filmography of the Yellowstone National Park

The Yellowstone National Park is one of the world's greatest natural land and water formations. It is only natural that a lot of novels, movies and documentaries have been written about the park. The park is the subject or the location of some media exploring both its beauty and its hidden fictional and real sinister power.

The earliest known movies associated with the park were taken in 1897 and directed by Mr. Thomas A. Edison; these were reported by Filminamerica: two black-and-white mini-movies entitled "Tourists Going Round Yellowstone Park" (18 seconds) and "Lower Falls, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park" (26 seconds).

One of the many movie guides made from the park is that with an obvious title of "Yellowstone Park", which features the grandeur of the park's beautiful scenery. It was designed to promote the park by showcasing the different water forms that the park offers to the visitors: its beautiful geysers, waterfalls, hotsprings and reflective lakes. The film took 25000 hours to complete but it was well worth the effort of the team.

Other travelogs include the much acclaimed best travelog "Yellowstone: Imprints of Geologic Time", "Yellowstone's Amazing Wildlife", and "Yellowstone: The World's Most Amazing Park". "Amazing Wonders of the World: Kingdom of the West - Yellowstone, Yosemite & Glacier National Parks" also featured the park along with the two other natural parks of equal beauty.

A docudrama series shown in BBC and Discovery channel, the first part of which is entitled "Supervolcano", evolved around the park's volcanic caldera. The film's fictional characters struggled to contain the spontaneous eruptions happening all over the park which spread across the globe. The film featured stunning imagery of volcanic eruptions and showed computer simulations of how the earth might look like after such violent destruction. It all ends with the park and a large part of the US buried in volcanic ash. And like all the other doomsday movies, the whole earth was affected by the eruptions and turned into a crazy world with the upper part in volcanic winter and the lower part in ice age or in drought. The second part of the docudrama was more of a documentary that provides evidence to the authenticity of the movie. It was entitled "Supervolcano: The Truth About Yellowstone".

Departing from documentaries, the Yellowstone National Park is another one of Hollywood's favorite venues. Movies starring the best of the stars have dominated the box office. One such movie is the 1992 film version of the novel with the same title: The River Runs Through It, which grossed $43,440,294 based on the report of Boxofficemojo. Another one of these is "The Horse Whisperer", also an adaptation of a novel with the same title written by the renowned Nicholas Sparks.

Even NASA has some mini-movies dedicated to the park. In the Cool Cosmos website, short movies (less that one minute) were posted, all designed to show through infrared videography both the beauty and power of the "Earth's geothermal power". These include some geysers, hot springs and even some local wildlife, all captured in infrared. It shows an interesting and unique way to view the park.

These are just few of the numerous movies credited to the beauty of the majestic Yellowstone Park. We should be expecting more movies of greater caliber to be made of this awesome wonder of nature in the years to come.

Has America Become Clap-Happy? - Why Are People Applauding in Movie Theaters?

I've noticed a trend in the last five to seven years -- you're in a movie theater, the movie ends, the credits roll...and people start clapping.

My first response has always been to ask, "You know the people who made this movie aren't here, right?" People didn't always clap at the end of movies. Sometimes they did it during the movie -- like if, say, a belittled office drone finally works up the courage to tell off his boss -- and sometimes they booed in the middle or at the end. But the applauding when the credits roll is something newer. And I don't like it.

The issue is that clapping is often a forced activity. Yes, sometimes you really do want to applaud something or someone, but other times it's like watching the painfully scripted applause breaks during a State of the Union address. Movies seemed to be the last bastion of entertainment where you could just get up from your seat and not have to assure someone that they did a good job.

The difference between movies and other events -- concerts, plays, sports games -- is that in most cases, the people responsible for the movie aren't there to receive the applause. You're basically sending out your approval to a blank screen.

Two major developments could be responsible for this growing clap-happiness:

1) The Internet. Today, people can give their opinion on anything and everything, and it can be done quickly.

2) The growing popularity of film festivals. It's not just Cannes and Sundance anymore; local libraries, colleges and movie theaters are hosting festivals that let more people encounter the film fest experience. And at film fests, it's appropriate to clap since the people who made or appeared in the movie are often in attendance. At the very least, you can thank the people who organized the festival.

But for every other movie experience, I ask you to sit on your hands -- we clap enough as a society as it is.

Hellboy II - The Golden Army - Review

As with all my movie reviews, I shall give you an honest opinion of the movie, going through both its good and bad points. Now, to start with, and I must write this before I forget, I had a major issue with the contingency of the movie, centering around the character Abe Sapian.

Those of you familiar to this series of comic know that Abe is a water inhabitant that in order to survive out in the open must wear the water equivalent of an oxygen tank...though its not exactly a water tank, but anyway I digress. For the first half hour of the movie, Abe wears this tank when both in the Headquarters and the outside world...however, randomly, part way through the movie seems to decide that he can actually breathe oxygen and the water tank disappears for the rest of the movie.

See, in all honesty, this isn't even a small inconsistency...in fact, its actually a pretty large one. Thing is some people are saying its because he randomly got some kind of small adapter, however something like this would need to be explained and would really only go hand in hand with Red getting a new weapon...which by the way he does not.

And now that my rant is over I shall go on to talk about the actual film and story itself. Now most people seem to have mixed feelings about this movie. I quite simply really, really liked it. It's not often I find myself actually laughing at this type of movie, and enjoying it, but I did. In fact its one of those rare Dark Knight occasions, and probably the last for the year as more Hollywood drivel prepares to hit the big screens.

The acting is this movie was brilliant, and the guy that plays the Prince, superb. The make up was awesome and very believable on such characters as Red. And as for Ron Perlman, that guy is highly under-rated as an actor and an action hero. In fact most people seem to forget he was in Alien Resurrection and Blade II...in fact, seems he likes to be in sequels...hmm.

I was however disappointed that David Hyde-Pierce didn't do the voice of Abe Sapien unlike in the first movie, a voice that definitely suited the character, however the voice acting was above par, and if you hadn't seen the previous movie, then you honestly won't care.

Also, a new addition to the Hellboy cast was the infamous and brilliant Seth MacFarlane doing the voice of the robot whom I believe was called Krauss...though I am not entirely sure of the accuracy of that statement. Anyway, his character was completely different the usual Family Guy and American dad that MacFarlane has introduced us to over the past few years, and I was pleasantly surprised at the limitless acting skills that this man possesses.

The story to this new movie was very interesting and successfully managed to keep my attention for the majority of the film, with the random comedy scenes, great action scenes and fantastic general story telling. And even though there will be a lot of people who will disagree with my opinion of this movie, I actually don't care. This is one of those movies that you will either love or hate, and for me this is definitely one of the best movies I have seen all year...not that there have been many contenders.

Event Horizon Movie Review

I feel that "Event Horizon" is severely underrated. The film wasn't successful at the box office, and I was actually lucky enough to catch it at the cinema when it was in it's first run before it disappeared quickly thereafter. Aside from a dreadful ending, this film contains some of the most deeply atmospheric and terrifying moments put in to a sci-fi/thriller for quite some time. Production design is first rate - all the ships feel and look very real and capture a very strong science-fiction feel (kind of the way the early Alien films did - but obviously not as good as those). It's actually a decent directing job by Paul Anderson (the director of such 'classics' as "Mortal Kombat" and "Soldier"... enough said). It's a shame this film didn't get the recognition it deserved, but at least on DVD format, it can still be enjoyed for what it is - a chilling, terrifying haunted house film set on a spaceship with some superb sci-fi images and production design.

There are some high quality actors in this film and they mostly do a decent job but nothing remarkable. This film is more about the terror and the production design. Laurence Fishburne is particularly good, as are most of the crew. Sam Neill is a bit of a let down - he just doesn't ever seem comfortable or natural, especially as he becomes the personification of evil on the ship by film's end. Maybe the material just didn't work him. The music is chilling and well composed... except for the opening and end credits which has a bizarre techno dance beat which is completely out of whack with the rest of the film (what was going on there?!). There's an attempt to go into Exorcist territory in some moments, particularly towards the end, and there's a bit of blood spilt. I'm not a fan of the latter but it should please the horror buffs.

I've already said it but I'll say it again; this film has a dreadful ending. After a fabulous build-up of tension and anxiety (combined with some very atmospheric space scenes), it turns out that the terror comes from the spaceship having gone to hell and back. That's it. The ship could have gone anywhere in the universe and it goes to hell. How original. Maybe some people will go for it but I felt it wasn't interesting enough (and definitely not original), and when the big reveal is made, it's so overblown, over-acted and over the top that it's kind of silly. A good, solid ending is a must for a film and it's amazing that this unimaginative, overblown ending still doesn't manage to kill the film. The rest of the film is of high quality and absolutely worth the ride.

A very solid, quality film that delivers on almost every aspect of the sci-fi, thriller and horror genres.

Movie Review - Sweeney Todd

Having never seen the stage version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, I can't speak to the fidelity the film shares with the play. That said, let there be no doubt that Tim Burton has crafted a true piece of musical cinema from Stephen Sondheim's bloody masterpiece. To their discredit, early previews have hedged a bit regarding the singing in the film. In them we only see Johnny Depp canting some recitative as he prowls the streets of London. While this scene is certainly in the movie, it's barely representative of the actual film which contains at least a dozen fully-staged numbers and only intermittent dialogue.



As the former Benjamin Barker, Depp is magnificent as Todd. His voice may lack the thunder that would be expected on stage, but on the big screen it's more than suitable. Purists may find it a little ragged and flat at times--Michael Crawford needn't worry about Depp--but it's an ideal manifestation of the corrupting anger and rotting vengeance that fill Todd's soul. The same can be said for Helena Bonham Carter as the fiendish Mrs. Lovett. Sure she will occasionally descend into something approaching a hectoring screech, but consider for a moment that she's a baker who grinds people into meat and serves them up in piping hot pies!



Voices aside, both actors deliver rich, complex performances. The focus and intensity that Depp brings to his role is riveting. Within minutes of the film's opening there is no doubt that Depp will have his revenge and have it with gusto. Taking a step back from the film, realize that Todd is a thoroughly despicable character. He often kills indiscriminately, but Depp is so powerful as Todd that you eventually begin to relish his countless murders. Carter's Mrs. Lovett is, perhaps, even more of a psychopath. Slicing a throat is one thing. Butchering a man and then serving him up for dinner is quite another. Nevertheless, you delight in her, too.



As for the killings, Burton stages them in spectacularly gory fashion. The phrase 'geysers of blood' is often used casually when describing a violent film. In Sweeney Todd the phrase is explicitly correct. Depp is often obscured under the high-powered jets of plasma that repeatedly erupt from his customer's necks. Amazingly, these scenes aren't even the most disturbing. Once Todd finishes giving a 'shave', he dumps the corpse down a hole where it cracks loudly at the bottom as the skull splinters and the neck breaks cleanly. It's all completely over the top and, of course, wonderful, hilarious, inspired.



The same can be said for the film as a whole. In Sweeney Todd, Tim Burton has found material that meshes perfectly with his artistic sense. You could call it a horror film or a screwball comedy and you'd be right both times. The design is, as would be expected from a Burton picture, lavish and spectacular. The supporting cast, especially Alan Rickman and Timothy Spall, are superb. Only the love story between Johanna and Anthony falls a little flat. It's a minor quibble, though, in an otherwise outstanding film. Sweeney Todd joins Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands as Burton's finest work. It may eventually even be considered his best.
